DCC Workshops

Hi. Are there any workshops available(more hands on than a short demo at an exhibition) to help a colleague of mine that would like to start using DCC? I know Hobby Holidays have done one but there is seemingly nothing planned in their programme. I also seem to remember reading, in the MR press, about a supplier from Lincolnshire(?) that offered in house training.

Thanks, PR36EGC

What's he looking for? Loco decoder installation, wiring the layout or what? Or someone to convince him that he's doing the right thing going DCC.

He may do beter starting off with one of the many books on DCC such as Ian Morton's (Is the cheque in the post, Ian?) "Digital Command Control" in his "Aspects of Modelling" series, or Stan Ames "Digital Command Control" but that's getting a bit long in the tooth now. I'm sure there are others, but those and the manuals that came with my DCC kit are what started me. You can refer back to those time and time again.

There are the on line web sites such as Allan Gartner's Wiring for DCC, see http://www.wiringfordcc.com/

A workshop only lasts one or two days. But there's joining his local club, provided that has some members intersted in DCC. That way help is always available.

I thought that PECO did some, or were those just exhibitions by DCC manufacturers?

Hobby Holidays are in Gainsborough, and that's Lincolnshire, perhaps that's who you saw.

And last but not least, get him to join RMweb.

I suspect that Digitrains http://www.digitrains.hosting.zenwebsolutions.com/

are the Lincoln people in question. While I have only patronised their mail-order service, they were very accommodating over a card problem, so I would have to call them helpful! They seem to have demo layouts, their range of products is wide, and they claim to offer advice. Not worth not contacting them, I think.

Fundamentally, the OP's friend needs to be aware that DCC is not a black art, and I say that as a very non-technical modeller who has had no real problems in a dozen years of using it. It is actually suprisingly simple in principle, but the very wide range of fine-tuning options available on decoders etc sometimes makes people think a science degree is essential. It certainly isn't - I left school at 17 and joined BR! - & in no time he'll wonder what all the fuss was about!

I have to say, if I was just starting out, I think the two 'right track' DVDs with Nigel Burkin (I think its numbers 8 and 9) would be a good starting point as an alternative to an 'in person' demonstration.

The Ian Morton book , the Nigel Burkin book, or the dcc guides from kalmbach publications (from US Outline stockists) are all great reading too, although most of the contents are avilable on the internet free from various sources already mentioned, not least this forum.

See Noveber edition of RM page 49a.

DCC Basics - 25-27 June 2010

DCC Decoder Programming - 24-26 September

Courses run by Stardancer Ltd, near Oxford. The proprietor, Michael, is well known and respected on the exhibition circuit for his layouts, he has twice exhibited in recent years at our show.

These seem to be the same courses as Ron3 said earlier were being run by PECO.

Cheers GU. I don't know if my mate has the patience to wait until June, however I'll pass on the info.
