Trev52A
Returning from the Dark Side here's a selection that I have called "45025". "Why's that?" I hear you ask. Well... A couple of years ago I bought a Black Five kit. Now Black Fives had many variants in both loco and tender so I spent an enjoyable couple of hours perusing my photos to see if I had several of one particular engine. And, sure enough, I did. So here's 45025 in the north-west in 1968. 680417 Manchester Victoria 45025 2.16.jpg 680417 Manchester Victoria 45025 2.20.jpg Manchester Victoria (obviously) on 17th April (both). 680710 Carnforth 45025 7.16.jpg Carnforth on 10th July. 680711 Carnforth 45025 8.32.jpg Carnforth on 11th July. 680709 Carnforth 45025 6.8.jpg Carnforth on 9th July. And, if you will allow me to be self-indulgent for a moment, here's my model. Gauge 1, meths fired running on a lovely 30th September last year. 2.JPG If you are interested this is the kit manufacturer: http://www.barrettsteammodels.co.uk/locomotivekits.html Chris Turnbull Super, Chris. And what a great 'punch line' with the model! Cheers Trevor
The Border Reiver
On the 4th August 1968 my friend and I took our Triumph motorcycles to record the last steam specials on the around the Blackburn area. On the 5th we went down again to visit Rose Grove, Lostock Hall and Carnforth sheds. Lostock Hall looked like there was some kind of fete happening by the amount of people going round the (then working) shed! Here is a photo of the shed yard with 70013 in the centre surrounded by the hordes and a shot of a 8F pretending to be 70013 on Rose Grove shed. Does anyone knows its real number? great central
Wakey, wakey! These two have been seen on an earlier thread, but they are part of the 1968 story as well.. (2138cS) 70013 ManVic 1-6-68 (T Ermel).jpg Manchester Victoria on 1st June 1968, with a 'special' I was on Cheers Trevor Crikey didn't realise Pete Townshend was a loco driver in his spare time:-)
Popular Post Chris Turnbull
As I'm out playing trains tomorrow (Sunday) I thought I'd post two selections today. You've already had "45025", now here's "Smell the Smoke". 44709 at Carnforth on 9th July. 75048 at Carnforth on the same day. 44709 again at Carnforth the next day. 48493 at Hoghton on 11th July. My mother used to say that the smoke from steam locos would "clear your sinuses". I hope you are now all breathing freely. leopardml2341
Oh dear, wandering over to the dark side, wake me up when we're back on topic. The OP doesn't exclude diesels, which were by 1968 in the majority.

pH
I think that 70013 Old Harry is actually at Rose Grove.......... I did wonder about that and, looking at my own pictures from September 1968, I would agree. However, I don't have a picture of that particular engine. Popular Post Trev52A
During the two weeks I was in the Carnforth area there was usually was a short early morning freight heading west which I photographed several times at Arnside or Silverdale, with a tender-first Standard 4 (75xxx) at the head. On this occasion I delayed my departure from the Youth Hostel at Arnside to photograph it from the upstairs window.. Standard Class 4 crossing the Kent Viaduct, Arnside, with a westbound freight on 18th July 1968 44894 arrives at Carnforth with a freight from the Hellifield direction on 19th july 1968 Trevor

Trev52A
Here's today's batch for you eager beavers: 680708 Carnforth 44963 5.15.jpg 44963 at Carnforth on 8th July. 680709 Carnforth 44377, 45017 6.12.jpg 44377 and 45017 at Carnforth on 9th July. 680417 Manchester Victoria 44735 2.18.jpg 44735 at Manchester Victoria on 17th April. 680710 Rose Grove 48191, 48448 8.12.jpg 48191 and 48448 at Rose Grove on 10th July. Chris Turnbull I particularly like the shot of the two 8Fs at Rose Grove station, Chris. There seems to be a sign standing on the platform, facing the other way. I wonder if it said 'No Spotters Beyond This Point' ?? Here are two on the line from Carnforth to Barrow, which seems to have been overlooked by many photographers. Before heading away from the Youth Hostel at Arnside in the mornings to the action at Carnforth or Preston etc., I sometimes caught a train to Silverdale (the next station to the east) or on this occasion the next one to the west... 44963 with a ballast train passing Grange-over-Sands on 16th July 1968 Another ballast train (empties this time?) at Silverdale behind 45231 on 1st August 1968 Trevor

Chris Turnbull
Was the white painting of the tender interior some sort of rust proofing. That's the only explanation I can think of. Probably a coat or two of metal primer unless anyone knows more. Chris Turnbull

Trev52A
I consider myself (along with several other contributors here, no doubt) very fortunate to have been at the 'right age' at the end of steam: still at school and thus able to take advantage of the generous summer holidays, yet old enough (17) to be aware of what was going on and to be able to use a camera with a fair degree of success. (I also developed and printed my own b&w films at the time.) If the pictures on this site are a reminder to those who remember the era, or an eye-opener to those who don't, then I'm happy. Having understanding parents was a boon, and the location of the Youth Hostel at Arnside was a bonus! I wouldn't have missed it for the world!
