Class 73 detailing

As far as the grilles go, I think the old Lima, current Hornby model's grilles are more finely detailed than the Dapol etched ones, even though they aren't 'see-through' on the older model. With a little careful painting, the moulded grilles come up very well indeed - the photo doesn't really do it justice.

I have bought some of the Dapol jumper cables/air pipes to add to the Lima/Hornby model, particularly the 73/0 with its extra jumpers.

Where the Dapol model scores most, IMHO, is in the underframe and bogie detail.

There used to be a fad at one time about 20 years ago to hack out the nicely detailed grilles on Lima diesels and electrics and replace them with crude etched ones. I never really understood why (except in the few cases where the Lima ones were wrong).

So I also kept the grilles on mine.

Mine has new underframe equipment, and things like bogie pipework and steps. There was a detailing kit from Craftsman at one point, but that range seems to have vanished off the face of the Earth so most of my bits were made from plasticard etc.

There's a Monty Wells article in MRJ issue 11 that's worth getting hold of, which explains what needs doing to the model.

It’s a while since I did the work (as in circa 2010) but I have done up a few Lima 73s

The Shawplan roof grill is ok (all but it not to the current Extreme Etchings standard.)

The biggest improvement is to the underframe, for which there are no kits available sadly. (Unless Dapol do any spares).

I cut up the Lima moulding and then used plasticard to make the 2d detail piece more like the real thing. A few compressors etc came from a southern pride EMU kit.

While I was at it I fitted the drive from a Bachmann 25

There might be a couple of blog posts way back on my blog, if I remember rightly I’ve done 3 of these now but somehow managed to loose one of them...

Hi Miles

I've bought a few Dapol spares to detail a few Hornby 73s that I have. Grilles etc available from DCC supplies although make a rather pricey "kit". One of my to do projects.

That's really helpful, I didn't realise they do bits!

Having several of the Lima/ Hornby 73/0's, they need the extra cable on the front, and its handed to the one fitted on the other side. Looks like a set of these could be the answer.

John.

Thanks for all the responses. Yes I have a Dapol class 73 chassis that I'm grafting a Lima body onto. So its mostly the cab pipe work Im after, as I want to keep the original livery of the Lima.

I used Heljan class 33/1 spares for the pipe work. Howes of Oxford are the spares stockist for Heljan.
