Maybe not the most exciting of pictures. The components for the Carriage cleaning platform arrived today, plus a controller for Grandsons layout. Last departure for me from Hattons.

Bit of a moment when something that is part of your life comes to an end, isn't it....

Ps, they must be getting rid of some big boxes as this was all that was in there.

So the list of things to do in the "difficult to reach" corner keeps getting longer rather than shorter.

Backscene: Created a 4mm elevation of the back of my childhood home, which looked out over the railway. I might appear at some point. . . .

Ballasting: I'm on my own for most of tomorrow, whilst Mrs FP goes off to village panto rehearsal, so hoping to get the ballasting done to date glued down.

Carriage Cleaning Platform: Now the component parts have arrived to scratch build a platform, they need to be assembled. I'll need to create a jig to make sure the supports are all the same thickness.

In the interim, I am PIC repairing my 3 year old Granddaughters little lorry. I have to live up to the sign I was given 😬:

Have followed @Worsdell forever's recipe he kindly told me about on his Chop Yat topic (thank you!) .

My effort looks very similar to his pictures. The six foot between the two tracks awaits the Carriage cleaning platform, so not ballasted yet.

Jig made and 30 supports cut and subsequently cleaned up.

I've taken information on sizing of components from a book titled Southern Nouveau. It covers all the concrete products of the Southern Railway. Pics of progress this afternoon, post ballasting activities.

Five episodes of Desert Island Discs listened to. Roughly half each on ballasting and supports.

A 'dry fit' of a short length of the deck and supports for the Carriage Cleaning platform.

There will be some strips to go below the platform deck to represent the beams that hold the deck up. Plus steps to add at both ends.

Quite pleased with this so far.

Rob @NHY 581 was parting with a Wainwright H Class in Southern livery at the weekend.

A bit of research found 1324 was allocated to Faversham MPD in 1951. Probably in BR livery by then. However 1326 was there pre 1948, so could renumber, or apply Rule 1.

Anyway, a couple of PMs later, cash parted with and a very well protected H class arrived today. Thank you Rob.

A couple of pics shunting some trucks down the dock at her new home.

Some of last night's endeavours on the Carriage cleaning platform. The scribed sections of 10ft planking don't show up very well in the picture.

In other news, the tailgate on Grandaughters toy lorry was also fixed.

Spent an hour making a template for the end steps of the Carriage cleaning platform from the drawings in Southern Nouveau book. Really useful modelling aid. Not all dimensions are given on the drawings I'm referencing, but sufficient information to work out missing ones for a model.

Will either need 3 or 7 more for the two sets of steps. Depends on stability whether I need to double up with a narrow strip sandwiched between a pair (8 in total) , or just a strip strengthener on 4.

Dry run of the previous nights work. End piers linking sections to add at the gaps, as well as steps and underslung beams. Then to paint and install.

A very pleasant day spent at the Doncaster show on Sunday. Put faces to some names on RMWeb: @LNER4479 and @Barry O on Hills of the North and parted with some cash for @Pete Goss s book on his buildings whilst looking at his Copper Wort layout. Nice to meet you all.

I took a list of bits and bobs I needed. With one exception, sadly all the others were 'back in the shop'.

Note to self: Email / phone suppliers to check they will have at/ can bring to the show, various bits and bobs. Will be reverting to t'internet to obtain what I need from them to carry on building "stuff". Fully understand why they didn't have them, so not a complaint, just an observation on 'don't assume' 😐.

Second set of steps completed along with the final section of cleaning platform. Intermediate supports to add in three places and underslung beams to add throughout, then to paint. Last night's dry run.

Primer has gone on most of the cleaning platform this afternoon. I've also drawn up another building for the backscene and started researching dimensions for others I want to incorporate.

The crinkly tin church shown in the post on 28th Jan was drawn up initially on lined paper to get a feel for it. I didn't need the lines to be on the sketch, so I purchased some Artist A3 paper and some water colour paints.

I traced the previous sketch by blu-tacking it to a window and then tacking the Artist paper over the top.

The picture below is the result of a bit of experimentation this afternoon. My plan is for the front row of buildings from my home town to be in colour and those further back to be silhouettes in dark and lighter colours.

The cleaning platform is now stuck together for its full length. Most of it has had two coats of primer. The final two sections that were not painted and joined now need to be done. Final coat to be added throughout.

Moving 1200mm of this about with its three joints is quite a delicate operation. Particularly if you don't clear the landing site for it first. . . .

Final coat on the Carriage cleaning platform puts it into 'fresh' concrete. I've used acrylic paints mixed to what I hope looks like an appropriate representation. It is darker than the pictures indicate. Needs dirtying up a bit to reflect foot activity off of ash ballast.

I will set this into ballast on board 3 (buffer stop end) and leave the section on board 2 loose until the railway is in its final position. I don't want to put any stress into this if the boards flex as they move and the level is finally set.

I can reach the area on board 2 quite easily. I've realised Track cleaning is going to be a bit of a challenge on the far road.

Looking back to when I first posted about this, construction has taken over a month to complete amongst other things that take up time in life.

It is still Jan 1st 2024 in the railway room. My (self imposed) deadline of having the railway reassembled was rather optimistic.

Concentration now turns to the backscene.

Another one for the backscene.

My impression of Faversham station water tower is taken from old photos, counting bricks from Google Streetview and comparing Google Earth dims with brick dimensions.

The tower was converted to a house quite a few years ago now. However, the back of the tower still shows what the front would have looked like. The railings around the top were there in black and white photos. I presume the tank has been converted to a balcony / terrace.

Hopefully the link below takes you to the back of the tower :

Saw some Peco 4mm scale Conductor Rail (Z Gauge running rail) at a reduced price over the weekend on my local model shop site (TMC - happy customer, no connection).

Quickly measured up the Carriage Sidings, Headshunt, Up and Down Lines and part of the descent to the Goods Yards where electric trains will be reversed and transfer to diesel power will take place for Freight*. Order placed for 18 1/2 metres of Con Rail. Insulators previously ordered, but not sure I've ordered enough of those now.

Future fun to come putting that lot together.

* Not sure I'm up to wiring the Goods yards for the overhead electrification for my Class 71 though.

Drew out a creek side warehouse yesterday. This one is side on, so the roof is visible. Inked it all in, stood back and realised it was wrong. I had calculated the height of the roof by measuring the gable end elevation. That makes the view from the side unbalanced, as the roof slopes away and appears lower to the viewer.

Back to the drawing board (literally). But first, off to York show with three others today.

Looked at the creekside warehouse drawing again last night and this morning. I'm now undecided, but still looks too high.

Trouble is the photo of the side I am comparing too was taken really close to the building, as shown. Pic added from further away as well. Thoughts?

My feeling is that even if you build it with the original blueprints, it could still look too big in the space available. So my mantra is to always go with what 'looks right' over what 'is right'.

Have taken the paper slicer to the roof and adjusted. I feel this looks more like it. Helped having drawn the tile lines 😊

Should have said that, as a creekside building it will sit at Dock level. This will be behind the viaduct section, with some space to the right of it, as in the prototype for land side vehicles to load/ unload. So part of what I have drawn of this building will be hidden.

In my world, ground then rises to the other buildings that will sit at roughly track level beyond the carriage sidings. I'm thinking a sleeper boundary fence to the right of the viaduct wall will partly obscure them. Will hopefully get to mock this up in the not too distant future.
