RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 1, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1, 2022 A Happy New Year from Waddlemarsh. This project is almost functionally complete. There is plenty of detailing to be done but traction power, signals and points all work and if I cleared the decks of modelling ephemera I could have a running session all controlled from the panel. Keep an eye on future developments. 15
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 2, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2022 First task for 2022 has been to fit a smart dark green card edge to the layout. This has also been extended to box in and define the control area. Both the Morley unit and the switch panel still lift out so access is readily available if required. There will be a loose-fit top along the back of the panel to cover the gap once I am satisfied with the final electrical testing. Notmany layouts have 2020 exhibition plaques! 11
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 3, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 3, 2022 Next move? With the control area now defined I can fill in the last “bald patch” on the board. This will feature a “reverse-angle” view using low-relief buildings facing away from the viewer. They will look out onto a road which in turn leads to the goods yard through a private gate. As seen from the control point Using the camera’s “selfie” mode here’s the reverse-angle showing what could well be railwaymen’s cottages and a corner shop. One or two of my followers might recognise the “totem” sign on the wall And why not have a pub at the end of the road? In the 1960s you could often find yard staff in here between jobs.

RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 5, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 5, 2022 This afternoon’s task has been to start paving Railway Terrace. Metcalfe paving slabs, etched rainwater goods snd hydrant ℅ Jim Smith-Wright. Dirt and dust from Peco weathering packs. Steady hand to place pavers and cut out the detailed ones - mine! 13
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 6, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 6, 2022 The Railway Tavern now has its footpath plus an outside table. This shows the position in relation to the control panel at the inner corner of the L-shaped layout. The umbrella and table is another item recycled from Penhayle Bay.
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 12, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 12, 2022 Today’s task has been to bring life to Railway Terrace. In one cottage husband awaits his wife returning from the corner shop. Bell’s on the corner has pigeons roosting on the ledge Next door the man of the house is home from his shift at the yard but might find things a little uncomfortable indoors
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 15, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 15, 2022 Ongoing furtling in the Waddlemarsh has seen a small coal facility installed at the end of the kick-back siding. This will be a public delivery facility though I’m sure some will be used to refill the bunkers of shunting locos at times. This is an Ancorton “Sleeper Built Coal Staithe” assembled, painted, planted and supplied with two grades of coal from Woodland Scenics Mine Run and Cinders packs. The wagon also has Mine Run loaded and fixed with PVA. Railway Terrace has also been securely fenced off from the adjacent railway with six-foot chain-link fence also from Ancorton. This is the security fence kit with post toppers removed and barbed wire omitted. And of course it has been painted and weathered. 16
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 20, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 20, 2022 Aiming for the look of an uncared-for lane with wheel-tracks and puddles. Materials are black acrylic paint base with fine cinders scattered into it and allowed to dry. Then puddles of Deluxe Materials “Aqua Magic” followed by stippled and brushed application of a mix of Raw Umber acrylic plus Woodland Scenics Earth base colour mixed with a little Peco ash for texture. This is inside the railway boundary so I don’t need to fence off between road and railway here. 11
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 22, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 22, 2022 An awkward empty corner has been filled. The mechanical horse is loaded with coal for the local round. Outside the pub the Saturday market stall is open for business. The large open gate leads onto the muddy lane which in turn leads beside the railway to the goods shed at the far end of the layout. 14
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted January 28, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 28, 2022 Waddlemarsh features in this week’s Kernow MRC newsletter with thanks to their team. Four images are loaded though only one appears on the page until the link is clicked. RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted February 5, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 5, 2022 (edited) Treated myself. I have been after a CMX cleaner for ages. It would have saved a lot of work cleaning Penhayle Bay’s 100-plus metres of track! Either they weren’t available or they were too expensive for available funds when I looked. No longer. This beauty arrived today and is already keeping the rails at Waddlemarsh clean and shiny. One of my Heljan class 07 shunters has been eqipped with a Kadee at one end to run with the cleaner. But mostly little bits and details. Fixing the signal box. Wiring up the lights. Installing point rodding. After that I can run trains!!! And after after that I have a couple of plans for future builds one of which will be “dual-gauge” and incorporate 009.
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted February 11, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 11, 2022 A busy moment captured from the road bridge. Two passenger trains. A Q1 waits the road to depart with vans. A solitary brake van is shunted with the shunter clearly indicating “stop” to the loco crew. There is no angle available to completely eliminate the control panel from such a shot.

Careful inspection of the photograph will show that one tree is already in place. More are planned and in stock but until I have completed all the tasks expected which might involve reaching over the layout their "growth" has been placed on hold.
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted February 19, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 19, 2022 Our schoolboy spotter may be hoping for a wave from the crew as large Standard tank 80005 arrives with a freight.
RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted February 20, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 20, 2022 (edited) Waddlemarsh c.1965 A schoolboy spotter at the fence (copping a different standard tank to yesterday’s), tge geese are fed, an English Electric Type 1 (later known as class 20) departs for Bow with a load of stone. The Waterloo train hums to a stop in the platform while that tank patiently awaits its next shunt move. Edited February 20, 2022 by Gwiwer

That schoolboy will be branded a fudger by his mates, they will never believe he saw two Scottish standard four tanks at his local Southern Region yard in two days, he's on his own too, no witnesses. The lad is doomed I tell you! Cheers from Oz, Peter C.

In due course I may renumber them both as others of the type spent all or part of their lives on the SR Until then “Rule 1 applies”
