Welcone back to Waddlemarsh.

In common with the rest of RMweb images posted in the last year are missing. I shall try to re-post them over time.

Many posts were also made to the Your Model Railway Club site meaning I have a ready record of what goes where. It will just take time.

Meanwhile a filthy “Thousand” has been sighted in the yard possibly banished from its WR home after being “washed” in an over-strength solution of Exmover.

The sight of a “West Country” taking water was also unprecedented

Wots the bloke with his arms out saying? Perhaps he's complaining the WC is far too big to be around here?

It’s a signal for the loco crew to stop. Two hands upright for emergency stop - two hands outstretched for a shunt stop. At least it was in the 1960s.

It probably wasn't too much Exmover but being in too much hurry to rinse it off properly.

Remember that West Country?  She left this morning, tender-first because Waddlemarsh doesn’t have a turntable, towing a single van.

A little work was completed today weathering the chain-link fence which runs alongside the railway for the length of the goods yard.

The paint mix is 4 parts Woodland Scenics Raw Umber, 1 part Woodland Scenics Black and 1 part Railmatch Rust. This was carefully let down a drop at a time with wet water until reaching an airbrush consistency - that of milk.

The mesh was painted using a wet no.12 flat Renoir brush. Corners were touched in using a round no.10 Renoir.

The posts, previously painted in Railmatch concrete before assembly and fitting, were then dry-brushed with the no.10.

The “before and after” difference is intentionally subtle.

A couple of trains.

JB (or class 73/1 for younger folk) E6007 waits to leave with a mixed freight.

While the weathering is shown to good effect on a Standard 2-6-4T tank and SR PMV (Parcels and Miscellaneous Van) allegedly in crimson livery and marked as a bicycle van.

Almost everything on the layout is weathered. Including the signals. Digital photography always renders things differently to the human eye but the posts and arms are lightly weathered and so are the coloured lenses.

The latter reduces the intensity of the LED glare somewhat. It does not, however, render the green aspect as blue as it should be. Dapol fit green lenses of a totally incorrect shade.  I have yet to find a “fix” for this.

A very dilute drop of blue acrylic paint on the lens may well reduce the intensity and alter the light colour?

Oh dear. Something has broken down.

The 350hp (class 08) shunter deals with a recalcitrant 2-HAL unit. In the background a 2-EPB has been found to maintain the service.

Note the different shades of “BR - Southern multiple unit green.”  Both units should be the same give or take variations arising from everyday use.  Bachmann’s version on the 2-EPB is much closer to the mark than Hornby manage on the 2-HAL for my money.

In anticipation of Easter weekend being busier than usual the local train was strengthened from 2 to 4-car today. The appearance of an ex-works 2-EPB unit in blue was a surprise.  The amount of passenger traffic offerring at Waddlemarsh Halt barely justified the longer train.

The goods yard has been rather quiet over Easter but things started to pick up tonight ready for the week ahead

D8011 arrived with vans from Stratford for onward movement to Feltham.  Stopping short of yard limits the driver awaits shunter’s instructions.

After admission to the yard the train was stopped ready for the loco to run round. The crossover point can just be seen ahead of the loco but there will be a delay until the freight on the adjacent road has departed.

Finally an overview of the yard. Trains include the empty fuel tanks also just arrived from Crickkewood and bound for Fawley and a refill at the refinery.

The 80 thousand tank reminds me of my only encounter with steam on the Southern when we went from Horsham to Brighton, by the Adur Valley line to see my great aunt when I were a nipper.

Several were based at Brighton and many were built there.  Neither of my two carry SR numbers but there could be a renumbering in the future.

I just missed steam on the “Steyning Flyer” as it was in the hands of diesel units by the time I got there.

Ooh look - a North British.

Early “Warship” D602 heads back to its Western Region home in charge of a freight in a view showing the yard approach track layout to advantage.

And someone’s home in the shunter’s hut judging by the bike.

As a third railer it's a treat to see the Southern modelled complete with concrete in abundance.  Although not much at Friary, trips to Waterloo and elsewhere always generated excitement, standing on the platform at Surbiton witnessing North Foreland speeding by one day;  and electric trains were always different.  Was it that long ago?😔

I still clearly remember being taken to "watch the trains at Fratton station" for my fifth birthday.  They were a mix of electric and diesel-electric units but there was quite a variety of types.  Then something whistled deep in the depot and a wheezing hissing green monster called "Ilfracombe" backed itself off-shed and eased up towards Portsmouth to take charge of a train; a train I never got to see because my time was up.  But that memory is still clear sixty years on and in some ways time has stood still.

There is still an abundance of concrete in many places south of the Thames though nowhere near as much as there once was.  It doesn't last for ever and replacements are never like for like these days.  There are some "Exmouth Junction" platform paving slabs at work though and a few concrete posts and fittings here and there if one knows where to look.  Sadly no longer the beautifully curved signal posts though - I can't think of any remaining in use.

Is ita problem that the LEDs used by Dapol are too white? Real life spectacle glasses are thw colour they are because the oil lamp behind them burns yellow. To use the 'proper' colour would need an LED with a colour temperature of 2050 to replicate a flat wick paraffin flame. A warm white LED is about 3000 and a daylight one would be about 5500-6000.

The signal linemen that I worked with would wipe the arm with a paraffin rag on each maintenance visit. Back in those days our local lampmen would wipe the spectacles clean every week when they changed the lamp.

If you mean the two line brackets, there were some between New Cross and Norwood Jn which I don’t think have been taken out yet.  However, I believe there was a restriction on climbing them (no longer deemed safe) so they might have been renewed to permit easier maintenance access.

Paul.
