7 mm 0-4-0T help please

Recommended Posts

Another one of my eBay whims a 7 mm scale etched brass industrial loco which I am trying to identify

Tried googling several searches but to no avail, will need some parts being scratch built and a few castings

Also came with etchings for a Backwoods garratt body

Thanks in advance

Thank you very much, spot on and I guess I may be able to buy the missing castings, certainly the cab rear should be easy to replace as will the cab roof.

The first thing is to clean up the chassis, stiff and rusty. Just needs a good clean and light oiling

The other thing in the box as I said was a set of body etchings for the Backwoods 7mm scale Tasmanian Garratt K1, quite tempted to build the body myself as its only missing a few castings and perhaps try using a couple of commercial bogies, one perhaps a High Level motorised bogie ( I can feel the purists shuddering), or just pass it on to someone with the ability to do it justice

The Slaters kit comes with etchings for alternative cabs, the Caledonian style cab as in the OP and the industrial type as on Kelton Fell http://www.cumbria-railways.co.uk/kelton_fell_loco.html which is preserved at Boness by the SRPS.

Thanks that's very useful, there are quite a few bits missing and I hope once I can obtain a plan I can source them. Trouble is both work and the garden rebuild is getting in the way of modelling, but the weather is too good to pass up the oppertunity

Slaters sold me a set of castings for my A12. So shouldn't be a problem. Best dealt with over the phone I would think.

I have bought complete sets even when I don't need then all. The price seems better and the leftovers always get used up somewhere else.

Neilsons sold some to  the NBR as well  and they unashamedly built more. They became LNER/BR class Y9 Pete Westwater has drawings for these I  could get if you want.

best wishes,

Thanks, may well take you up on the offer. Would the drawings have the alternative cab configurations, as not too certain which version I want/be able to build

Thank you for this information, I am a bit weary about asking kit manufactures (other than Southeastern Finecast) for parts to make up kits not bought from them

I hope these photos help, missing all brake gear, which I am hoping to cobble together and needs dismantling, cleaning and reassembly

No that's fine and I was thinking of assisting you!

I note that the leading axle is in horn blocks so I assume there is some kind of control to step the loco from dropping at the front?

The simplest was to sort this (if you need to) is to put in a fore and aft rod against which the top of the axle sits. This will keep the loco level but will also allow the wheels to follow the track (the axle can rock). With only four wheels to pick-up current it's vital that they all touch the rails.

Hi John,

The drawing shows original NBR and as rebuilt LNER. The rebuilt cab was quite different from the Caley one and the "industrial" cab was how they ran on both Caley and NBR when first purchased/built. I think Pete will forgive me if I part scan my copy of the drawing. A scaled up print of the original 4mm one. I have mentioned elsewhere that in the 60s these were one of things sold to help the SRPS buy a real locomotive. The NBR 0-6-2T and the Caley 0-4-4T that had been put aside were [priced at £650 each. In the end BR lost patience, the 0-4-4T was saved and the poor old N15 went for scrap. In those days £650 was a lot of money and some of us were only schoolboys. Selling postcard photos at sixpence and drawings for a few shillings took a long time to build up. The surplus from the NBR group was eventually put to the purchase of Maude. I wonder if we had been successful in preserving the NBR 0-6-2T if Hornby would now be producing a model of this.

best wishes,

Ian

Thanks for showing the scan I think I will have to investigate matters further and perhaps Google a few photos to see the options, whilst my intended modelling area is the West Country I do love the Caledonian blue colour, though it may well be more in keeping as an industrial loco. Plus follow up the Slaters lead

Thanks again as its much appreciated
