RMweb Gold tomparryharry Posted July 22, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 22, 2018 Hello folks, can I call on your experience, please? I'm considering an Oxford Dean goods. However, it appears that there is a supposed 'good' version, with twin flywheels, and a cheaper version, single flywheel. Is there a difference in quality? Or, running ability. Views & responses much appreciated. Cheers, Ian.
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted July 23, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 23, 2018 Ian The quick answer is the first batch with lots of discrepancies has a twin flywheel motor and runs well and the later batches are more correct and have only the single flywheel and running can be a bit hit and miss. For the full story read the thread below. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/107457-oxford-rail-announces-oo-gauge-gwr-dean-goods/?hl=%20oxford%20%20road start from around page 60, when the loco was released. Looks like there is room to fit a 2nd flywheel on the motor on the extended shaft sticking into the smokebox, something I will do if I can find some brass stock in the shed. Maybe even make a larger flywheel to replace the now smaller single one. "A bit hit and miss" is an understatement, but IF you can get hold of a good 2nd gen one, they do run ok. PanzerJohn
I've had nothing but trouble with twin flywheel version, on my third now and it's started stalling at low speed. I won't be buying any more Oxford tat, it's a shame as it's such a well detailed and good looking loco.

The words 'if I can find some brass stock in the shed' suggest you are more than capable of doing this, not to mention scratchbuilding a DG that runs properly! Burn the engineer, burn him, burn him...
