RMweb Gold TravisM Posted October 15, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 15, 2018 I was at Stamford station last week and I was surprised to see that it’s staffed by East Midland Trains though apart from the 06.05 Nottingham- Norwich and 21.45 Spalding- Nottingham, all the other services are provided by Cross Country. When I worked for FGW, Dean and Dunbridge stations on the Salisbury- Southampton Line, though unstaffed were operated by FGW but South West Trains provided the services. It got me thinking, are there any other lines where the stations are opened by one TOC and services provided by another?
RMweb Premium Moxy Posted October 15, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 15, 2018 Yes, Wigan North Western. Operated by Virgin, but some of the services through it are run by Northern (when they can be bothered running them of course)
wombatofludham
Burton upon Trent. It's managed by East Midlands Trains but no EMT trains stop there any more, all services are provided by Cross Country. Quite why EMT manage it I'm not sure unless it's because for a while there was a Burton to London via Derby service, or whether it's an anomoly caused by the abandonment of Phase 2 of the "Ivenhoe" line from Leicester to Burton which didn't come to fruition. Either way it is a curiosity.
009 micro modeller
I think there are a few served by Cross Country but operated by others - I don’t think their franchise includes managing any stations.
Jim Martin
This was a question in the London Reconnections Christmas quiz last year. The quiz is still available at https://www.londonreconnections.com/2017/london-reconnections-2017-christmas-quiz/. Question 6 is the relevant one. The answers are at https://www.londonreconnections.com/2018/2017-quiz-answers/. When I was doing the quiz, I found a website that listed a surprising number of stations not served by the operating TOC, but I can't find it now. Jim <Edit>... or perhaps I can: http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/stations/notserved.shtm </edit> Edited October 15, 2018 by Jim Martin
RMweb Premium 31A Posted October 15, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 15, 2018 (edited) In the case of the Stamford and Burton examples, this is because Cross Country don't manage any stations (certainly was originally the case and I think still is), so there will probably be other cases involving them. Edit: Sorry, I was beaten to it! Edited October 15, 2018 by 31A
RMweb Gold Dunsignalling Posted October 15, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 15, 2018 (edited) Exeter Central, staffed and run by GW with services to/from Paignton, Exmouth and Barnstaple (the Devon Metro, a.k.a the Triangle of Doom) but the only long distance services are provided by SWR to/from Waterloo. cal.n
Until a recent ScotRail timetable change, many ScotRail operated West Highland Line stations were request stops for the ScotRail service but a timetabled stop for the Caledonian Sleeper
Zomboid
Who operates Lockerbie? ISTR that was ScotRail operated but only served by WCML/ XC trains.
johnlambert
Claverdon and (probably) Bearley in Warwickshire. The stations were operated by London Midland but the only stopping trains were operated by Chiltern Railways (and then I think there were only a couple of trains per day that actually stopped). Talltim
Dronfield is managed by Northern, but until about 5 years ago was only served by MML/EMT and XC
caradoc
Who operates Lockerbie? ISTR that was ScotRail operated but only served by WCML/ XC trains. Lockerbie has been operated by Scotrail since privatisation but no Scotrail service has ever stopped there, and since the Caledonian Sleepers were separated from the Scotrail franchise in 2015 no Scotrail service even passes through Lockerbie. PS I should clarify 'for passenger purposes'; There have been a very few occasions when, in Scotrail days, the Sleepers did stop at Lockerbie; This was at Christmas/New Year when, because the Sleepers operated for 5 days instead of the normal 6, the Sleeper crews would end up stranded at the wrong end of the line. Therefore the Up and Down Inverness trains were booked to call at Lockerbie, at the same time, so that the Crews could swap over and return home for the holiday. Of course, one night, while one Driver was aware of the stop, the other was not and the train passed straight through ! The delay and hassle that caused was unbelievable.

Currently Bearley gets one early morning WMR train going to Stratford (no return journey) the rest of the service is Chitern Claverdon gets the same one WMR stopper as well as the Chiltern service Bearley: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/BER/2018/10/16/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt Claverdon: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/CLV/2018/10/16/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt Keith Edited to add RTT Edited October 16, 2018 by melmerby
RMweb Gold CovDriver Posted October 17, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 17, 2018 There's two stations I can think of that are operated by WMR but have no WMR services these are Water Orton and Coleshill parkway.
