TexChem
I am seeking the wisdom of the collective in identifying approaches to constructing access ladders (and safety barriers) that are found in fuel storage areas in TMD's. I am at a fairly advanced state of building a representation of the fuel tanks/pump buildings at the former Buxton TMD. The basic construction has been completed and I am in the process of adding the details, specifically at this point the access ladders (and safety barriers) - I am a bit stumped on how to progress. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Either components (etched or plastic) or from scratch are on the table. What I am trying to produce: https://www.flickr.com/photos/httpwwwpeakdaleworkscom/7700426500 What I have so far. Thanks a bunch.
RMweb Premium Dave John Posted November 30, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 30, 2018 Quite a few suppliers do etched brass ladders. Wizard / 51L do a kit for a proper round rung ladder which with careful construction looks much better than a flat brass one.
Goochie
Looking at the picture of the Buxton tanks, they don't appear to have any deckplate around the tank hatch, only a base frame welded to the tank to hold the handrails. Eileen's Emporium stock ranges of metal and plastic section suitable to build the base frame. Another website, www.alwayshobbies.com stock a range of stanchions and handrail, specifically for marine models, but adaptable for railway use. Campaman
For simple ladders you can cut a thin slice from 6mm twinwall plastic sheet (like estate agents signs are made from), if you cut the slice from the edge that has the sections you get a nice ladder, rung depth is down to how you slice it. Used on the watertank below
sdw7300
I've used these: https://www.scalemodelscenery.co.uk/lx024-oo-industrial-ladders-oo4mm176-630-p.asp (Laser cut fibre board) They also do all sorts of barriers & fences Cheers

TexChem
Thanks for the additional suggestions. At least I won't have to look too hard for a supplier for swear words......
Bill_J
imo, scratchbuilt swear words to fit the location, is the only way to go. Bill
Stuart Birks
For my water tower I used a simple etched ladder and soldered some 0.5mm brass wire down the front edge of the sides to remove the flat look. This ladder came from Model Signal engineering but any etched ladder will do. Stu.
