Ade's 7mm layout: Malmesbury station

Had another productive day. I built up the new five bar gate and four bar wooden fencing for the cattle dock and installed this onto the layout. As usual this copies the prototype. There will be some trees to be added  down the left hand side. Well thought out little kits. No connection, just a very satisfied customer.

Since taking the pictures I have built up the earth ramp a little where it meets the brick base of the cattle dock to removed the "step" and added some earth coloured flock.

This morning I had a drive up to Sheffield and bought two more point levers which I have also installed to the control panel.

I have also invested and a static grass applicator and bought various shades and lengths of grass. Some plenty to keep me busy.

Cheers, Ade.

Ade,

not sure because it looks different in the two pictures but fence posts should always be vertical, even when the land isn’t horizontal.  Looks to my eye like it’s like that in the lower photo, on the near fence, but the far side (and the upper photo) looks like the posts are perpendicular to the ground line.

Hi Simon, the photo is a bit deceptive, but they are as upright as I could get them within the confines of the kit.

I used to do gardening for a living for 26 years, so I know the theory. Stuff not being level or upright does my head in. As Lez will testify :D

Cheers, Ade.

The fencing does look very effective Ade, I had looked at the Poppy range for station fencing for my proposal as a similar type was used in my region being modelled, I decided not to as i had already got the ubiquitous GWR cast iron in my stash, nevertheless they do look like good products.

After fitting the sound chip to the 43xx yesterday, today it was back to doing scenery on the layout.

The fencing and gate were given the first coat of paint. The gate will need hinges making and adding plus a latch. Then all will be weathered.

I have also had a play with the static grass applicator. I bought some 2mm grass, but to be honest it is too short and have progressed on to 7mm and 12mm lengths. This has been applied to the field to the left of the cattle dock. This is Woodland Scenics light green with a touch of medium green added, then finished off with some earth powder on top. I am pleased with how this has turned out.

I have also shot a short video of the 43xx, but having trouble uploading it at the moment.

Cheers, Ade.

After my parcel arrived late this morning from Precision Paints, today's job was to fit the cosmetic fishplates in place on the track. The are very neat items in moulded dark brown ABS plastic. Very pleased with them. The usual disclaimer applies. They fit over the top of the Peco metal fishplates. Just cut off the sprue and superglue in place. I will carry on with this task tomorrow. Done about half the layout today, but only on the viewing side.

Cheers, Ade.

Today I have added the static grass to the right side of the cattle dock. I have also weathered the fencing and gate with a dry brush of grey and made hinges and a catch for the gate out of brass rod and strip. Also finished the duck boards.

Also added a bit more weathering to the GWR wagon, seen here delivering coal to the station coal store which was supplied with coal once a year.

Thanks Phil.

Looking at the photo of 9659 reminds me that I must add the numbers to the bufferbeams and change that weight classification code dot from yellow to blue. The Dapol model is a bit of a hybrid out of the box. Sold as "GWR" it comes with a BR smokebox number plate, which I have removed. The real life loco was built in 1946 at Swindon.

Nothing got done on the layout yesterday after real life got in the way.

But today some more progress was made.

All the connection leads from the point levers were soldered in place to the PCB. I now need to buy some wire to connect the points and signals up.

The missing fireman's handrail was finally put in place on 9659 now the crew have been fitted.

The SR pattern tail lamp was also put in place on the SR Brake van. Need the SR pattern side lamps now to complete this.

Started doing the static grass on the far side of the engine shed loop.
