Great Western
After a break from model railways, and going back in time 30 odd years I’ve retreated to my default modelling position of 1960s Western Region steam. I’ve no plans for a layout, but I am trying to build a collection of locos and wagons that I will be practicing my basic entry level weathering skills. Great Western
My first project was the Dapol British Railways Standard Brake Van in Baxuite colour: As an aside I plan to collect a further four vans to build up a end of steam branch line Brake Van railtour formation.
RMweb Gold MarshLane Posted January 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 27, 2019 Very nice! I've two of these to do myself ... fancy giving us an insight as to how you went from as new to work worn? Rich
Great Western
The second batch of arrivals were two fantastic Minerva Models 8750 British Railways Late crest pannier tanks. Loco No1 will become 4698 a Severn Tunnel Junction allocated loco upto withdrawal in 1965. Progress to date on 4698 is that I have fitted the bunker side steps, tool box, smoke box front steps, frameplate pipe work and ATC box under the drivers aside of the cab. I’ve taken advantage of the tie up between Narrowplanet and Minvera to buy the two sets of number plates. Both locos will be weathered to depict locos weeks from withdrawal, I was planning using transfers to replicate chalked on numbers until the cast plates arrived but I’m not sure now as both locos appeared to carry their plates to the bitter end. . Great Western
An example of how I want my locos to look is attached - not my locos, results of a google search
Great Western
Very nice! I've two of these to do myself ... fancy giving us an insight as to how you went from as new to work worn? Rich Thanks Rich, id like to say I spent hours pouring over prototype pictures, carefully replicating the weathering from the real thing to the model... But I literally slapped paint on, wipped it off, slapped a different colour and wipped it off until it looked right lol What I didn’t realise was the roof, and internal compartment ends come out until I watched a YouTube video !
Great Western
To accompany the Minvera 8750 locos, I found a bargain at Rails of Sheffield once the form of BR 8750 - 9759 which remarkablely kept is GWR tank side letters well into the mid 1960s! It’ll be interesting to compare the two makes of pannier, this loco will also be weathered to reflect its end of the line status.
Great Western
My second wagon project has been the Dapol British Railways Standard freight box wagon.

SNAP!! I too am modelling 4698, same time period too, except I'm using the Dapol version for this loco; my Minerva Pannier is 3675. Re details on 4698; she had two short grab irons on the fireman's side cab corner, and extra lamp irons on the rear bunker that were from her days on the Southern Region, as far as I can ascertain, as well as the other details you have noted. Although a Severn Tunnel Jnc loco, one liberty mine carries is an 85B shedplate, in my own little tribute to Gloucester Horton Road shed. In her final years, the real 4698 didn't have a shed plate fitted. Minerva 3675 with yet-to-be-weathered Dapol 4698; the Fireman of 3675 is clearly related to the driver of 4698!!! As they'll never be run together like this, I should get away with it!!
daifly
4698 also had a pair of disc brackets on the front of the tanks - these are visible in post #4; presumably also from it’s time at Nine Elms. Dave

Great Western
My Dapol 8750 Pannier No. 9659 in British Railways with GWR lettering arrived this morning, I must say the packaging Dapol have supplied is extremely good there is no way the loco is going to move or become damaged due to impact in the box. The loco is to the same specification as the Minvera models, really good colour and transfer application, etched cabside number plates and no lose parts. The plan for this one is to work again it to represent the loco towards the end of its life just like the other two locos.

Great Western
Im sure some will recoil in horror, however this way of doing things has helped get the first stage on the locos. 1) Paint on with a soft brush. 2) Brush off with a hard brush.
