Over the winter period I have scratch built the signal gantry and ground signals using Peco kit parts, MSE etches and ground signal kits. The gantry has the two starter arms for the bay and platform, and inboard of these has two disc signals for shunting purposes. The sidings either side have a yellow disc signal to control the shunting onto the mainline. I have also scratchbuilt a 4 headed ground signal to control the access from the mainline into the four possible routes back into the station. These are all operated by modified car relays to give an increased throw by soldering a length of 1mm brass rod onto the moving armature. I must be mad!

Now it is warming up a bit, I have got on with painting the sea on the horizon and adding sections of backscene to give the impression of depth. I have fitted a PECO fence infront of this, painted suitably mucky colours.

Yesterday, I started work on the scenery at the fidlle yard end. I had a rough idea on what I wanted, with a narrow stone bridge obscuring the exit, and a grassy bank sloping down towards the signalbox. The bridge was made using parts of the PECO bridge kit, with a scratchbuilt girder structure on top. The stonework was painted with a pale coloured emulsion and left to dry, before adding thin washes of black and grey. More will be added when the scenery is complete. The land forms for the bank have been made out of polystyrene sheet, glued down with pva. These will be covered in card strips, then with papier mache, and finally artex.

I managed to weave some card strips inbetween the formers, and pinned them down with round headed pins. It is now being left till tomorrow to dry before adding a layer of paper towels soaked in wall paper paste. Bring on the messy bit!

I dont know why but the post disappeared! What I was trying to say:- I have now added two layers of paper and glue to the card formers. It now needs a good few days to dry out before I can apply the artex.

The last few days have seen me installing the point rodding using the Wills OO kits. The parts in these are definitely over scale for OO gauge, but seem about right for O. It took quite a while to work out the routing, which is fairly prototypical. I know the kit is for channel section rodding and the GWR used round section for many years, but they did start using channel in the 1930's, anyway, I am happy with the result. There are three facing point locks on those points used by passenger traffic.

Second layer of glue and flock on the hills, hedges made out of lichen and pva, and some fine ground up green foam used for weeds. This end is starting to become finished.

For a break from the scenic stuff, I got on and finished another of my plasticard creations. I started this Stanier mogul about 4-5 years ago, based on a Lima 4F chassis and tender, and lots of other bits from my junk box. I will get around to cutting the spokes open on the wheels, but it was fun to make and great to see it run.

Right, point rodding fitted - check. Telegraph posts fitted - check. Signal wire posts fitted - check. People positioned and checked for artistic effect - check.

The telegraph posts are from Peco, the white metal figures are from S and D Models, from their Phoenix 43 range. I now have to prime and paint them all.

I have modified the S and D Models Station Master, so his arm can move up and down waving the green flag for train departures. He might be powered by a servo, a solenoid, or a plain push pull rod. You will notice he is left handed!
