sb67
Can anybody tell me what is the gunge that you see on a lot of 08's just in front of the cab as seen on this pic., and how best to repicate it in model form? Many thanks. Steve.
Steamport Southport
On the air brake box where the number is? I thought it was just a bit of grime. But the other side is the same which makes me think it's actually painted a bit darker. https://www.flickr.com/photos/92367454@N02/8707799477 Here's another photo of it. https://www.flickr.com/photos/grays-railways/3300527083/in/photolist-XgNKAR-ecWdWP-meUho2-egtKpK-iL2R9K-25fubD4-2aZ1Wyr-ntkSLK-fdDxg5-dzEUGh-26GvrYo-T6qekr-26rU2W2-r5LxyK-9xL71u-4F37Kg-hmmAD6-FsJjaq-eaEg2h-pcPa6c-62E4Hn-e8VSJA-nrghPb-pa3Ucp-9Ty58b-jtnrYj-27WwDZg-trNXwn-29LPzD7-rofSgj-DWaFKa-faWrCS-hpPpf1-a6crVr-GJh5HD-eeSGGo-BW9s1f-m142TP-5y5vFf-hpQt1p-fNNomH-Vqa7mS-8ACNSy-GK6YnX-6SjQxB-2crg4ZB-CS62nk-q7BeAm-e9Dwmt-SdS69L Jason
RMweb Gold 57xx Posted February 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2019 (edited) Looks like fuel spillage to me. The filler is IIRC on the top in front of the cab and the boxes in front of the cab are part of the fuel tank. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c7/No.08939_(Class_08_Shunter)_(6697036925)_(2).jpg You can see wet fuel stains on this one: https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yB4wTI5t-po/WQTPXY28AHI/AAAAAAAAINY/GntjZMftJKcaCKGiYN7i_gZ0tLFRDAn1wCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/33360886644_c5c29e6149_o.jpg Edited February 27, 2019 by 57xx

sb67
I though it was a leak of some sort but always thought they were re fuelled under the cab. Great photo's, love the 08 being re fuelled by a road tanker. Steve.
SRman
Fuel spillage or leakage from the breathers combined with rail and exhaust grime. Those bulges are the fuel tanks. 1
RMweb Premium CloggyDog Posted February 28, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 28, 2019 IIRC, there's a header fuel tank in the upper part of that bonnet section right in front of the cab. Part of the loco start-up procedure is to pump (by hand as new, electric pump on some later survivors) to prime the fuel system before starting. There's a breather vent on the roof from that header tank. Over-enthusiastic pumping will fill the (30gal?) tank and force fuel out of the vent. To replicate, I've used a dark mix of my usual matt leather/metalcote gunmetal mix, applied quite liberally. 2
RMweb Gold 57xx Posted February 28, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 28, 2019 Thanks Cloggy. Confused the filler with the tank breather, I did think it was a bit of a silly place for a filler but didn't extended that thought process last night. Safe to say regardless though, it is fuel spillage. Pretty obvious from a lot of pics where it can be seen the staining is from a fluid.
