Happy belated New Year all!

Started 2021 by progressing 37059 in original DRS livery over the past few evenings following its arrival between Christmas and new year alongside a delivery from Brian at Shawplan a day after ordering - superb service!

37038 is pretty perfect for 059, apart from the bogies which @dj_crisp very kindly supplied from a class 50. The plate on the side also needs removing similarly to 218, which I’ll do using a lolly stick, sandpaper and masking tape not to damage the surrounding area.

Shawplan windscreens fitted at both ends and the fan grille. I also soldered up the etched top headlight (held in place by insulating tape for the photo).

Pondering how to attach this properly without purely gluing it!

Couldn't resist posing the two RHTT tractors together this evening. A nice pair I think! Really pleased with the authentic details between the two - spot the difference anyone?!

And a quick shot with the other tractor on the bench!

I’m certainly enjoying the 37s of late. Hope everyone is staying safe and well given the recent news. Certainly more modelling time to be had at Motts Lane!

Kind regards,

Will

A quick update on 37059 this evening. I’ve fitted the etched top headlights and the etched horn grilles.

Firstly the headlights were punched, and then drilled using the dremel:

The top headlight is secured to the model using a piece of brass rod that I’ve soldered to the headlight, which clips into a hole drilled in the roof (absolute pain in the backside that was!).

Then soldered with the peg:

Finally two photos of 059 all but complete detailing wise for the body:

Hopefully this should allow for easy removal during painting, and being easily relocated on the model. Once the roof/headlight is painted I’ll make a start on the electronics.

Evening all,

Taken a break from the DRS tractors the last few days as I’ve done about all I can for now with the detailing parts I’ve got in stock. The top headlight has been fitted to 37218 using the same method previously described, and I’ve done the first round of filler on 37059:F5E4B0EF-BB5F-41F0-95DA-2D6D10AB8575.jpeg.4c8b0f0d6dbc067a284b35d4b90e4ac9.jpeg

059 is now ready for the first coat of primer when the weather improves. I’m putting off sanding off the plate on the bodyside as I really don’t enjoy doing it having to work so carefully. I think that’ll be a weekend jobbie.

Turned my attention back to 47145 and the Penbits class 47 bogies. I’ve finished the assembly of the subframes and the bolsters, and modified the bogies to fit in this evening. The bogies need cutting tomorrow to fit the plate in to allow for the full springing. A few shots of the bogies below:

Much easier having already done the set for 37114. Following the mods to the bogie towers I’ll make a start on the wheels.

And I couldn’t resist posing 145 on the bogies with the in progress Shawplan windows and plasticard strips under the cab roof:

More progress soon hopefully. Hope everyone is staying safe and well.

Kind regards,

Been progressing various projects over the last few weeks. Mainly I’ve been working on the first of two S Kits KWAs for a small engineers rake. Following an order which arrived yesterday from Phil from Stenson models, I assembled the sprung Y25s yesterday evening. I cleaned up the remaining white metal castings today as there was loads of flash over the holes on the Y25s and the holes on the equipment on the deck. A shot of the wagon in the yard at Motts Lane:

Need to get the bogies onto the main deck of the wagon, add couplings (Dingham one end, screw link the other, and then add the finer strap/ratchet details and it’ll be ready for painting.

Thanks for looking!

What are you planning for transfers on it?  I have one that I built at Lydd Rail about ten years ago, and finished painting during the first lockdown that’s sat awaiting transfers.

Thanks Rich - do you have any photos of yours? Not sure - I think they’ll be a custom job. I’ll let you know what I end up sorting.

A quick few photos of two projects I’ve been working on since Friday; the first of two KWAs and the first VGA EM conversion using Phil at Stenson models’ new W irons/cast axle boxes. I must say these are awesome and I can’t wait to do a few more VGAs/Bachmann air braked wagons. This VGA needs air pipes adding, as well as a new data panel for a VKA.

The KWA needs the final details adding then it’ll be ready for painting.

KWA fitted with Stenson models New screw links:

Here is mine, I just noticed that a hand wheel has fallen off and needs reattaching.  The digger isn’t right but it’s all I had to hand, as the wagon is far to modern for me it needs to go.  But I don’t feel comfortable putting it through the post so it was supposed to have gone on the sales stand at Showcase.

Very interesting to see that done, will keep that in mind if I have any issues with the couplings on curves.  At present everything just has standard Dingham loops fitted and I dont think I had any issues on Wheal Imogen (its been a while since I had it set up last).   But the layout is fairly straight and the points are B7 or greater.

But the idea might have another application for me, most of my Dinghams do not yet have the steel wire added.   I dont want to have fixed uncoupling spots, so planed on gluing steel wire to the top of the loop and using a magnet from above to raise the loop.  you now have me wondering about the potential to form the whole loop from steel wire

I was pleased with the KWA, particularly the masking tape strapping.  One of those where I wish it had been introduced a few years earlier so I could justify it.

Hi all,

The latest project I’ve been working on for a few weeks is 08561, one for the potential P4 Temple Mills project I’m mulling over currently. Quite an interesting loco I think with the weird EWS panel, what appears to be taped on double arrows, and the small NRN pod on the roof.

A quick shot of the prototype embedded from Flickr:

08561 @ Temple Mills 5-2-2006 MJC

Following the arrival of some superb etches from @Pete Harvey, I’ve spent the weekend and most of yesterday assembling the new end grille, as well as the steps. I think these items really lift the model. Looking at photos of 08s, the grilles are never uniform, which the etch really replicates (with a bit of ham fisted assembly thrown in for good measure!). The steps add a lovely bit of finesse over the originals, which were epoxied onto the model and are really solid once the adjoining bar is added.

The next steps are as follows:

- Add handrails all over the model

- Finish filling unnecessary holes

- Convert to P4

- Replace the rods with Brassmasters versions

- Add tanks under the grille end to replace the cut out nem pockets. If anyone has any suggestions on what to use I’d be very appreciative!

Onto photos in the natural light of the trusty garden step:

Hope everyone is safe and well! Thanks for the continued support on my projects.

Another tractor currently on the workbench - 37047 in Mainline blue with the Laira centre headcode conversion from an ex split box loco. I’ve used Bachmann’s 37055 with new ends, rebuilt using drilled scrap brass and Shawplan light covers. I’ve also added handrails, etched horn grilles, new headlight and PH designs lamp brackets as well as opening up the moulded fuel tanks. The windscreens from Shawplan are next on the agenda after a rough fitting last night:

This is the first loco I’ve laminated the windscreens with solder after a tip from a fellow modeller on Instagram - which has really improved the strength and appearance of the screen.

This beast will also get some Penbits bogies for conversion to P4 for the potential Temple Mills layout.

This week has been spent doing more class 37 windscreen work. Using a combination of Epoxy and super glue, 37047 & 37516 have had their windscreens glued in place, sanded back, and filled. These two bodies are now ready for a coat of primer:

AE585DEF-7C5A-4A18-AB73-A8151C76AC37.jpeg.3ee7354e0933f4ee186fc64f887c16c5.jpeg

The primer no doubt will show up any imperfections which will then be sorted.

516 is also requiring the second man’s nose grilles to be replaced with the non split type. Following @The Fatadder idea of retaining the original frame and replacing just the slats of the grilles, I was out with the Xuron etched scissors last night:

Hopefully this should look good once completed! A set of 08 Ultrascales arrived this morning for my 08 so also looking forward to getting that converted!

Looks spot on Will, now that I have ran out of my own etched slats that I used on 667 I will add a set to my next Shawplan order so that I can sort out the grills on 521.  As ever those front windows make a massive difference

Thanks Rich - a great technique so thanks for the inspiration! I’m really pleased with the windscreens on 047/516; so much so I’m going to have to redo 114 annoyingly (glazing doesn’t fit in either!).

37516 has been my main focus this weekend. I’ve got the grilles fully changed on the second man’s side which I’m really happy with now. Took an age to file them out but well worth the effort. I’ve also changed the buffers both ends which makes it look much more 516 like! Hornby class 60 one end, and Lanarkshire OLEOs the other end. These white metal buffers are lovely!

Next up is to add the roof fan grille, a final tidy up of the screens, add the bodyside sandite port and the RSH cantrail grille dividing bars. I’ve ordered some Mr Surfacer 1500 black primer alongside some other lacquer paints to test on this model.

I’ll also be fitting some Penbits sprung bogies, hopefully an order should be arriving to keep me occupied over the Easter weekend!

Hope everyone is keeping well!

I’ve been beavering away with my model of 37516. I’ve fully detailed the model, with etched windscreens from Shawplan, etched sandite port, etched second man grilles (changed for the correct type) and changed the buffers both ends to the class 60 style from Hornby, and round cast OLEOs from Lanarkshire Models. I’ve been trying out my new Iwata this afternoon, applying the first coat of proper primer - using Mr Hobby 1500 black primer. A bit more finishing to do, but overall very happy with how she’s looking!

I must admit I’m thoroughly impressed with the primer, and quality of the finish it has achieved. Would thoroughly recommend giving it a go!

Kind regards,

Will

I’ve been beavering away with my model of 37516. I’ve fully detailed the model, with etched windscreens from Shawplan, etched sandite port, etched second man grilles (changed for the correct type) and changed the buffers both ends to the class 60 style from Hornby, and round cast OLEOs from Lanarkshire Models. Hi Jerry - thanks for the kind words sir. The primer is very heavily solvent based (lacquer) so it goes on beautifully, but stinks the entire estate out! Can thoroughly recommend it, although not to spray inside. The 37 needs one more round of sanding just to get it perfect then it’ll be a top coat and done. I think this could definitely be applied in one coat - and being lacquer it was fully dry in 30 mins.
