There’s some great inspiration out there so I’m not sure they’ll be ultimate - they’ll be as good as I can get them though! Southwich Posted December 16, 2021 Author Share Posted December 16, 2021 Hi all, Realised I haven’t updated this thread for quite a few months, mainly due to progressing my Workshop which will house Temple Mills - a link to the layout thread can be found below: I have also been progressing stock projects for the layout, a few of which can be found below: JJA Autoballasters: Given Temple Mills has a rather large engineers yard behind the depot, I’m going to need some stock to run past on the mainlines behind the depot. First of all I’m building up a couple of rakes of Autoballasters. They arrived in, erm, interesting condition (having been bought cheap for this very reason): The below photo show the work with the cotton buds (and a £50 bargain VItrains 47 which I will cover later on): Top wagon before, middle wagon during, bottom wagon after a careful scrubbing with cotton buds and white spirit to remove the paint, permanent marker and preserve the Railtrack text: …and after all of the repair work was undertaken - good as new! Good as new! Ready for conversion/weathering when the weather improves! 47635: Very much inspired by James Wells’ hybrid 47(https://westhalton.wordpress.com/2019/03/18/the-hybrid-class-47/), I have been working on my model of 47635 in mid 2000s condition. I’ve used a Lima body on a narrowed Heljan chassis with Penbits sprung bogies on Ultrascale wheels. The assembly of the bogies is largely complete and I’m ready to move on to the brake gear and cosmetic bogie details this week, as well as using Gareth Bayer’s UPdate article to scratchbuild the battery box only style underframe. A very enjoyable project so far - looking forward to getting the underframe done and then moving onto Shawplan’ing the body and painting. This is what I aiming for (embedded link from Flickr)… …and this is what the model looks like so far: The above update brings the thread up to date - I’m hoping to progress ‘635 further over the Christmas period, however with an Elegoo Saturn arriving for Christmas I may well be distracted trying to work out how to print some useful parts! Southwich Posted February 14, 2022 Author Share Posted February 14, 2022 Not a great deal to update on the last few months (cocker spaniel puppy arriving hasn’t really helped modelling time!) - 47635 has had the sprung bogies complete ready for some Shawplan goodies and 37059 has been converted to P4 using the Penbits kit and Hornby class 50 bogies courtesy of @dj_crisp - thanks Will! I had a great time yesterday visiting Tim Horn, running my 37698 on a few steel wagons on North Elmham. The converted 20/3 and Penbits’ed 37059 also got a run out on my P4 RHTT set, which may be one of the first converted to P4? North Elmham sure is a stunning layout - nice to see it with some up to date stock on it! Links to the three videos can be found below: A few small tweaks required but on the whole the stock ran really nicely. 37059 did short out a few times much to my distress, however on further inspection a stray piece of brass was shorting the wheelsets. Dinghams need some slight tweaking to ensure push pull operation works smoothly but apart from that the set ran nicely. Hopefully some more to come over the next few weeks. Thanks also for the compliments on ‘698 - definitely my favourite loco. A set of ultrascales means it ran flawlessly through the pointwork. Southwich Posted June 9, 2022 Author Share Posted June 9, 2022 A few bits progressing over the last few months, but in the last week I’ve been focusing on units: First great eastern pairing of the 312 (southern pride kit) and the 321 (Bratchell Models kit). The 321 is nearly all assembled but just needs work finalising the bogies, there is a lot of moulded plastic to remove! The 312 needs a lot more fettling to get together so will be more of a slow burner. I’m trying to get projects to a painting stage so that later in the summer I can have a mass painting day. TTA - I'm modelling PR58256 using the Stenson models parts. I have replaced the underframe, walkways, springs, couplings, filler cap (this needs modding to match the prototype) and converted to P4 (Branchline wheels). Left to do on this is: Add lamp brackets, underframe piping, brake actuator, handrails/additional end pipe, solebar plate, solebar dividers/solebar rivets, brake shoes & yokes, brake pipes and swap over the buffers to LMS ones when they arrive. As soon as this is done I can go over the model with a dash of filler and prepare it for painting. ZCA - thanks to @The Fatadder for this donation to model 200543. I have converted to P4 using the suspension units and Gibson wheels which I had in stock, and I'm awaiting buffers from LMS to add to this. Has anyone modelled a VCA under frame that they could post photos of? I'm thinking a level of scratch building will be required here, but any pointers would be much appreciated! SPA - I had a spare SPA kit in the stash, so I have knocked this up and converted it to P4 again using Stenson suspension units. This has used the new under frame kit, which I will supplement with additional wire/scratchbuilding per James Wells' efforts. Number TBC on this one as it was a bit unexpected! I've also got a rake of Seacows on the bench for conversion (5 sets of Y27s and 2 Gloucester sets) so will post about these once I've finished the bogies for the rake. I managed to acquire some etched parts from Colin Craig about 5 years ago for doing a couple of OAAs (which I started but still haven't finished). I understand the etch was intended for an FPA but wasn't added to Colin's range. I think JSW used the same to improve a OAA, might be something in his P4 New Street site. Just one observation for your era 37114 was missing a handrail under the headcode box at no2 end, a legacy of a minor side swipe from when it was in RFD livery. Still quite a bit of work to do on the nose ends and roof, as you say that handrail needs removing but I think I’ll replace all of them with finer wire and I need to think about sorting the lamp brackets too!
