The loco's are now in my hands.. One happy bunny.

I have often thought about a small working diorama for the HOn3 and maybe this could be it.

(Richard Kindig photo) The coal drops at Sargent. Far too big for to find a place on the layout. I already have a kit for something like this, part of a job lot of stuff I bought for the Australian diorama.

While this would make a great 'picture of the month' and maybe it will in a future calendar, for April's, you will have to wait until tomorrow.

Did you ever go to Dobwalls in it's hay day....

I did, back in 1970, before the Big Boy era. Don't remember a lot about it. Being a fourteen year old, my mind was on other things, mainly the daughter of the guest house owner where we stayed in Liskeard.

488 being serviced prior to a run to Farmington. June 30 1961. The roundhouse dog not perturbed by the goings on.(Could he be the reason for the cut out in the plow?  Maybe he regularly slept this close the the track, a bit like the late Yeovil Pen Mill cat)

Going back a few posts, I put up a comparison of a K-36 and an 8F. With the new K-36 book I have the actual dimensions.

                                                  K-36                           8F

Length                                   68' 0¾"                     63'0½

 Width                                   10'6½"                       8'7¼"

Height                                   13'4"                         12'10"

Weight-loco                          83.48 tons               72.1 t

Coal                                        8.5 (9.5 short)          9 t

Water  imp gal                    4163 (5000 US)         4000

Cylinders                             20"x24"                    18½"x28"

Boiler pressure                   195 lb                         225 lb

Tractive effort                    36200 lb                   32440 lb

The most surprising thing for me is the width, almost 2' wider.

Stripped the C-21. Overnight soak in cellulose thinners, gentle scrub with a soft wire brush, then 8 minutes in an ultrasonic cleaning bath, another scrub, then another 8 minutes.

The underframe wasn't that bad, just needed a scrub on the cylinder on the bad side. The tender hasn't been affected badly and will get away with a good weathering, which is rather fortunate, as I only have enough large Rio Grande decals for the K-28.

C-21 after it's respray.

I have used Tamiya Rubber Black, with Citadel Boltgun Metal for the smokebox. It doesn't show, but the cab is painted Humbrol Mid-green. Once the decals are on and it's weathered, I will use liquid glazing for the cab windows.

I have always had a fascination for flying boats, so when I saw this, I had to buy it.

Scan.jpg.e9e1580608a39fc3245fd9c2e617f650.jpg

I used to have one about Aquila Airways. Unfortunately it was leant to a work colleague shortly before he passed away due to a heart attack.

Oddly enough, we were talking about Flying Boats here just yesterday - a timely picture for me to share with the family, thanks.  Keith.

I remember seeing the Princess flying boats when I was very young. Not sure where, either at Calshot on the ferry to the IoW, or the one at Cowes.

All decal now on and given a coat of matt varnish.

The numbers on the lantern sides are actually bigger than they should be, but trying to find 361 among a strip of numbers the size of the small script on the cab, was beyond my eyesight capability. Next up will be to weather it to match the tender.

The trucks will need a bit of wire brushing, buy otherwise happy with the way this looks when comparing it to photo's.

Not much modelling done this last week or so. Today off to Taunton for SWAG members day. Next Sunday it's Bristol Railway Exhibition. Then a weeks break and on the 14th, off to Rugby for the Slim Gauge meeting.

Main reason for not doing much modelling, is that one of my cats has high blood pressure and needing a pill every day.

Once the scars have healed, I may resume modelling. Though he might have to take them for the rest of his days.

Trip to the sorting office to collect these today.

The pipe gon is etched brass, while the other two are laser cut wood. The Pullman looks to be challenging. Coming from Canada, the postage was about half of the US postage rates and only took 7 days, as opposed to 3-4 weeks. They also slipped through without duty being paid.

478 & 476 on a westbound freight at Sublette, May 28 1968. The loco's had been shopped at Alamosa over the winter and returning to Durango for the summer season to Silverton. 1968 was the last year of operations from Alamosa to Durango and from Carbon Junction to Farmington.

Early rise for a day off. Dinner in the slow cooker shortly, then into the car and the drive up to Rugby Railway Club for the Slim Gauge Circle meet.

Sadly, under examination, the C-21 has had a few flaws revealed, which may be not only costly to fix, but may fail in the long term. So, for the time being, it will be a depot diva. Though with the motor and gearbox removed, it could be used in double heading.

That's the bad news out of the way. The trip to Hillmorton did see a few successes. Managed to offload a few surplus items and pick up a few.

Found a suitable Ford F-1 panel van and someone who will print me some decals for this.

Bought  some 3D printed coal cars, a caboose and a passenger coach for the sum of £30. and got another couple of Micro-Trains C&S reefers.

Hattons pre-owned have just listed this afternoon over 50 items of Blackstone HOn3 rolling stock (not locos).  Might be of interest?  Edit: some locos have now appeared as well.
