Idle Speculation
Hi, This is my inaugural post here although I've been watching the boards for a couple of years now. Currently building a JLTRT TSO... Just wanted to say thanks for all your coach build pictures and advice!
brian daniels
Welcome to RMweb Glad the thread has been helpfull for you. I have just ordered a SO to go on my rake. What time period/livery are you doing yours? Whilst waiting for paint to dry, which ain't long in this weather! I have stripped my green 121 ready to re-paint it in blue or blue/grey. Just glueing the bits back on that fell off and re-filling gaps after using Nitromors to get the paint off
Idle Speculation
Hi, My TSO is going to be rail blue, modelling late 70's (my era of class 40 bashing!). For this project, I've moved to RailMatch enamel from JLTRT cellulose after seeing your BSK. It's worked out much better, although I'm not brave enough to paint it in one go at the end like you do! Soldering the etch bogies is a bit of a daunting prospect....Maybe I'll post a picture further down the line. Thanks for the inspiration. brian daniels
Hi Alan, look forward to seeing your TSO on here. Well the RMB is finished. I took a couple of pictures with the roof off to let the light in. The CK is nearly finished. I really should get it done. I am just about to paint my Westdale 121 into plain blue. Thing is would it look nice with a driving trailer coupled up to it?

brian daniels
The wood effect come out better than I thought it would I painted it first with Railmatch Teak which is a light brown/tan colour. If you go back to page 20 there are a couple of pictures of the Teak painted interior. Then I went over it with Ronseal Walnut coloured satin varnish. Ronseal do quite a few different coloured varnishes but I am sure Walnut is the more common wood interior. I remember seeing on some MkI interiors a little plaque telling you what the wood was.
HealeyMills
Hi Brian, That looks absolutely superb Really like the interior and the method you have used - it is so simple but very effective. Cheers Lee

Hi Brian I love the 121, I am thinking of doing the Easybuild kit (in the same livery as yours), how was the Westdale to build - is it preformed with a wooden base ala the coaches/does it come with wheels/motors/gears etc? I am always concerned about painting aluminium (assuming that it was ali) - even with the correct primers etc..... ATVB CME
brian daniels
At Reading on Saturday I got hold of a JLTRT 08 kit Here are some pictures showing what is in the box plus the Slaters wheels and motor/gearbox for it. Going through the parts it is a very nice kit with a quite few castings for such a small engine. I must admit that there are a couple of castings that even I can't identify at the moment and I have been driving them quite a lot recently As usual the instructions, whilst good, could do with being a bit clearer. You definatly need some close up pictures to help with this. Anyway I have just made the buffers! Think I will end up doing 08946 an ex Oxford loco. RMweb Premium Pannier Tank Posted May 8, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2011 Brian, I can see the kit allows for variations in Cab Doors and also the cabinets; does it cover the variation in the running plate? Up to 08698 (D3865) the running plate had a lip at the top and a fillet that projects downwards at the rear end of the running plate to the buffer beam, 08699 (D3866) onwards did not have either feature, the running plates were plain and had no fillet to the rear buffer beam. RMweb Premium eldavo Posted May 8, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2011 Oh no, I can feel my credit card twitching! Be interested to see how this turns out as I am definitely a Gronkolohic. Cheers Dave
brian daniels
Hi David, there is only one running plate in the kit. I do not know if they may do a different one later on. This kit is for 08's with the extra compressor box on the left hand side over the 2 lower air intakes. I have made the 4 buffersup. Nice touch with these is that they are a self contained type that when compressed does not go into the bufferbeam. Usually there is a bit goes back through the bufferbeam when compressed but on an 08 the frames are there so a self contained buffer is the only answer or a cutout in the frames. Now though for the tricky bit, trying to glue them on the bufferbeam without glueing them solid
simon br blue
Nice buffer. Is it me or are there no coupling rods?
brian daniels
Is it me or are there no coupling rods? Well spotted that man. The coupling rods are pre drilled on a jig by JLTRT. Unfortunatly they put the wrong ones in the box, ones that had not been drilled yet. I returned them at the show so I am waiting for the drilled ones to come. Plenty to be getting on with in the mean time though.
RMweb Premium boxbrownie Posted May 8, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2011 At last, does this mean the 08 is finally released, or did you get a sneaky pre-release kit Brian? This seems like its been forever coming down the line..........
craigwelsh
The masters for the roof and that buffer appear to have been made via rapid prototyping from the banding displayed in the material. Looks like a nice kit though. Very impressed with the coach and 128 on the previous page too now i've caught up .
Pugsley
The masters for the roof and that buffer appear to have been made via rapid prototyping from the banding displayed in the material. I think that's how JLTRT make most of their masters, certainly most parts of my 37 kit show similar evidence.
CME and Bottlewasher
Hi Brian, That 08 kit does look great....making me think twice about my MMP 08 I may model it on Paul and Peter's 08....Richard of course has the GTi version Those buffers look a treat.....best of luck gluing them on....... The rapid prototyping really is magic isnt it and I must say that most of the JLTRT resin castings do look superb... ATVB CME
RMweb Premium Pannier Tank Posted May 9, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 9, 2011 Hi David, there is only one running plate in the kit. I do not know if they may do a different one later on. Brian, from your photos it looks like you have the correct running plate for 08 946. Can't wait to see the finished job, I presume you'll finish it in BR Blue? I do wish you hadn't started this thread
brian daniels
Done a bit more this afternoon. I glued the bonnet sides and front to the roof after inserting the M3 threaded inserts. I have squeezed the wheels on their axles being carefull to line up the crank with a spoke. One job to do later is to make some balance weights as there are non in the kit. Mind you I don't think there are any in the MMP 08 either. I took some pictures today to show where the weights go in relation to the spokes and cranks. The motor and gearbox is now permanantly fixed in place. The sideframes are screwed onto the frames so are removable, hopefully. I have just placed the body and side boxes on just get a feeling for it.

Brian - That is true - but back then [in 1988] the wheels available were from Pemberton, which as I recall had the weights. Once Slaters became the only game in town, we had to put them in.
