RMweb Premium Popular Post Neil Posted July 20, 2019 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted July 20, 2019 About twenty years ago I put together a layout in a box file, just to see if it was possible. It predated the OO gauge association's box file challenge and came about as I used box files for stock storage and wondered if I could build a layout which would stack on the same shelves with them. I'm not sure if it was the earliest example of the species but I was unaware of any others at the time. It had it's five minutes of fame in the Modeller in June 2007 since which it's gone back into another set of shelves and been largely forgotten. This afternoon as I had the camera out for other purposes I thought I'd get the layout out and take a few snaps. Here are a few of them. Box 1. Box 2. The side backscene (does that make sense?) fitted into place. The remaining pieces. Fully assembled. I'm quite please with how well it's kept, but then it has been boxed up for years. 19

RMweb Premium Neil Posted July 21, 2019 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 21, 2019 Many thanks for the kind comments. 9 hours ago, sb67 said: .... how do you operate the turntable? Steve. The simple answer is that I don't. The turntable is largely built out of plastic and though the rails are metal they aren't wired up. It is possible to rotate the turntable by hand to pose it for photography but even if it were possible to move it remotely I doubt that wagons would stay on without some form of gadget to stop them rolling away. Here are a few more snaps I took yesterday. 15

IncorrectlySpelt
I love just how much character that passenger train has, really shines on such a small layout. How did you make the carriage, is it a cut and shut of the Hornby freelance ones?

Thank you, the scenic part is 37cm x 24.5cm and folds down to 7cm when dismantled and the box folded flat. 1 hour ago, IncorrectlySpelt said: I love just how much character that passenger train has, really shines on such a small layout. How did you make the carriage, is it a cut and shut of the Hornby freelance ones? The carriage (and I assume you mean the one in the last photo) is indeed a cut and shut Hornby job but with some windows blanked out to create the guards compartment. It runs on a similarly cut down Playcraft brake van chassis. However the Hornby carriage isn't freelance, it's based, albeit very loosely, on an SDJR example.
