I thought that it was just my layout in the making that has ended up as a shelf. I have to clear it off regularly. Once you get all of the green areas sorted, only the fiddle yard becomes a dump, which isn't so bad!

I've been using hairspray to apply my static grass, and that seems to work well.  Easier to get hold of than layering glue I'd imagine (and probably cheaper too).

Thanks Graham, good to know. I did experiment with other glue for the base layer but it didn't have the same effect unfortunately. I needed to order some more grass anyway so it wasn't too much of hit thankfully!

Yesterday afternoon I managed to complete the Goods Shed. I started the design in October 2020 and then construction in March 2021. However, apart from weathering, this is the largest building on the layout complete.20220129_215026.jpg.cde31ce27f163c2e5e45d94f791f7229.jpg

Firstly, a shot of the 14xx shunting the yard. Below are some shots of the Goods Shed.

Unfortunately the 16xx suddenly stopped working running into a cassette so some diagnostic work will have to go on this week...

Thanks Graham, a little more to do on that front still. Adding a pile of Ten Commandments crates with a microled embedded for good measure.

I'm also tempted to get a couple of Modelu figures but I feel like Coombe Town might end up with too many staff!

Love the shed - what colour have you gone for on the barge boards, guttering etc?

Andy

Thanks Andy,

The cream is Phoenix Precision SR Buildings Cream. Sounds bizarre but online references suggest it is the best match for the BR WR Cream, using Humbrol 98 for the chocolate colour.

Ok - that figures - I am still working in the 1930s stone no 1 and stone no 3 myself - but also from Phoenix

I've now had a chance to put a base coat of static grass along the embankment leading to the signal. It feels so good to get some greenery down!

In celebration I ran some trains and experimented with some new angles using my phone.

Firstly, 1470 leaving Coombe Town with a short Goods train. This is going to require my DSLR to perfect, but I do like the view under the bridge.20220202_201922.jpg.3357bff7214554de97d1afe55c75d911.jpg20220202_201740.jpg.2c167b93b5db2903fe30c572abefad81.jpg20220202_201802.jpg.cba03c56cfd18ab7fb819690bb84cded.jpg

And from the other side, looking across the yard.20220202_202144.jpg.6ca95c55bef53fe91a85e3eaea708d5a.jpg

Finally, 7310 bursts into Coombe Town. These two shots really help me picture the layout in its final state, which is the first time I've actually imagined it coming together.20220202_204153.jpg.2c30762b533fcee054da01da70d8a329.jpg20220202_204227.jpg.d3ae34584f60b5daa77cfe4f76fa57e6.jpg

One of my layouts currently has the other layout on top of it...

Always nice to get some turf laid!

Can I ask what you used to build the retaining wall around the signal?  I will need to make something similar for Chuffnell Regis.

Sure Graham, it's SE Finecast embossed plasticard. I've normal English Bond for the regular brickwork, for the top I've used a strip off their arches sheet (FBS411) as it has a long strip of capping bricks.

In other news, a parcel turned up from Rails this morning. It contained a Sound Fitted Dapol Large Prairie. Despite being limited to a sugar cube speaker it has reasonable sound but suffers from the intermittent stalling caused by the rear pony truck.

Either way, I'm happy with the model and will probably tweak the rear pony in a few weeks once it's had some more running.

With No.18 Kadees Fitted it has been brought into service on my lunch break.

The Kadees allow reasonably close coupling as well, to the extent the buffers touch on the curve.20220203_123222.jpg.aba5eadf6a042ae09413473387fc9880.jpg

  • 2 weeks later...

Some more progress this week. Initially I painted the upper half of the signal box.20220211_170539.jpg.588418dd01cf09c78e3d37e8fe3c8376.jpg

Then today I managed to find time to construct the roof, add guttering to the main structure and begin tiling. Unfortunately I've now run out of tiling and modelu guttering bits to finish off the box so it will be stalled for sometime.20220213_223212.jpg.6e391348e9f08dd4fc6d2eb4f94f5f34.jpg

After a running session on Thursday evening leading to the scene below. I had a photography session with the small prairie tonight now I've switched the formations around a bit.20220211_170532.jpg.0927acbff2fc7a426f6783e19b567b22.jpg

Photos from tonight will follow when I've had a chance to process the DSLR images on my laptop.

Your goods shed looks amazing, the level of detail and the working doors are impressive., as is the signal box progress.

I really like the use of CAD, 3D printing, and then scratch building to get the level of quality you desire. Any interest in getting your own 3D printer to cut down the waiting times and make little tweaks easier?

I did consider getting a 3D printer a year or so ago but I reckon for the benefit the cost isn't worth it.

I only get an evening or maybe two most weeks that I can dedicate to modelling and tend to spend the rest and the weekend either socialising or scouting.

In terms of tweaking, the Goods Shed was rather smooth thanks to the laser cut shell. The signal box is another story! But I have a plan for the v2 windows...

A few shots of 5541 entering the station at Coombe Town. I've now found a decent photo stacking method that makes post-processing slicker, hopefully this means more photography sessions.

Lovely pictures. Are those Dapol signals with their LEDs showing?

Hi Andy,

Yes they are the Dapol signals but instead of 12V I use a 9V phone charger to power them. They still work fine, just aren't quite as Christmas tree like.

I agree that with 12v they are too much in your face so I plan to tone mine down a bit too - did going to 9v make any difference to the action of the little motor?

I am also seeing if I can make working illuminated ground signals from cut down Dapol N gauge signals.
