RMweb Gold Strathwood Posted August 9, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 9, 2023 In stock today we welcome the latest issue of Western Times number 7 in the series for those collecting them, if you are quick on your toes, we can still supply all the back issues for those who need to catch up, some are getting low in stock so don't delay. Western Times Issue 7 Covering a timespan of 142 years from the GWR’s inception to closure of the diesel hydraulic era, Western Times embraces a vast and varied canvass with many aspects of the ‘Old Company’ yet to be acknowledged let alone explored. In this issue, extending the boundaries geographically continues with two essays on South Wales – to describe the complex history of Penrhos, a busy meeting place for several constituent railways, and to illustrate some Welsh Pre-Grouping coaches that survived to join the BR fleet. There is an account of the experiences of an apprentice fitter/ turner who started at Reading depot in 1953 and a review of the locomotive fleet on the Midland & South Western Junction Railway at the Grouping and later. Continuing inclusion of post-steam motive power this time covers diesel multiple units, and there is a study of the Marlow Branch, home of the ‘Donkey’. The usual ‘regular’ features appear: - the latest Bulletin from the Great Western Trust, signalling matters, a further trawl of Dick Riley’s archives, and readers’ feedback in Guard’s Compartment. The boundaries are stretched back in time to two events that helped make the GWR so different and so special. Consideration of Broad-Gauge matters commences with an account of some events at almost the very beginning. On the ‘narrow’ gauge, there is a taster for a special publication in preparation to celebrate what unquestionably was the most important locomotive event of 1923 when No. 4073 Caerphilly Castle set standards for express locomotive performance that other railways could only envy. Contents Introduction Penrhos Junctions Caerphilly Castle - 100 Not Out The Versatile Collett 2251s - from the archive of R.C. Riley Pound Green Signalbox MSWJR Locomotives under the GWR Book Review The Marlow Branch: One that managed to get away Experimental Motive Power: Broad Gauge Hurricane and Thunderer Modern Traction: ‘Diesel Multiple Units’ in Colour Recollections of a Western Apprentice Reading Sand Van Absorbed Welsh Company Coaches The Great Western Trust (GWT) – Bulletin No.6 The Guard’s Compartment 80 Pages with 90+ Photographs & drawings. RMweb Gold Strathwood Posted August 10, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 10, 2023 A Pictorial Atlas of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Just in case you are sitting on the fence on this one. What our customers say, so far. "Just had my Somerset & Dorset railway book I must say impressive packing just great. Plus, the parts of the book I have looked at so far are worth the wait and the money. Thank you" - Jonathan Green by email "The S&D atlas is one of the best railway books that I have ever seen. It is well worth the money, not least because nearly all the colour shots have never been published before and, thanks to Gerry Nichols of Bristol HMRS, there are plenty of excellent shots from the Mark Warburton Archive. If you want one, order a copy now as they are quickly running out." - Chris Youett on Facebook "Safely received today - what a wonderful tome!" - Chris Bone on Facebook This is the packing we lavish upon them for our customers all in a very stout box and shipped by DPD fully tracked. It appears that over half the print run has sold within the first two-weeks since its launch. https://strathwood.co.uk/products/a-pictorial-atlas-of-the-somerset-dorset-joint-railway Kevin

RMweb Gold Strathwood Posted August 11, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 11, 2023 I spoke with George about this earlier this week, he is finishing the Southern Signalling book first and then he can concentrate on Volume 3 of Main Line to the South. The last six months or so has been very busy behind the scenes for all of us. No dates yet but it is pencilled in for this year, I hope. RMweb Gold Strathwood Posted August 15, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 15, 2023 Having arrived late yesterday afternoon we welcome another high-quality large format title that deserves a place in so many book collections. THE ATMOSPHERIC SOUTHERN ‘The Atmospheric Southern’ will take you on a journey around the Southern, viewed through the cameras of a dozen or more eminent photographers. Starting at Victoria, we will go clockwise around Kent, Surrey and Sussex, before moving westwards to Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, the West of England and then back up the South Western main line to Waterloo, finally ending at Nine Elms shed just before the demise of steam in July 1967. There is also an extended feature on the railways around Redhill – a strategically important railway crossroads. Mostly steam, the subject matter includes a few diesels and electrics, while the extended captions give details of so much more visible in the pictures. A fabulous and much anticipated follow on to the two previous releases of George Heiron's delightful photographic talent, already displayed in the same large format style within Atmospheric Western and more recently within George Heiron's Travels Midland & Western. The format is the same through all three volumes very much akin to the likes of Each a Glimpse and Gone Forever from that other master of the lens Colin Gifford. 160 Pages well illustrated throughout with some 180 delightfully composed black & white photographs depicted in a large format HARDBACK Further details https://strathwood.co.uk/products/the-atmospheric-southern-available-to-pre-order-now Kevin

RMweb Gold Strathwood Posted August 22, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 22, 2023 A review from one of our many satisfied customers around A Pictorial Atlas of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Those who thought there were so many books about the S&D may be sceptical about the latest publication and whether it contains anything fresh or is worth acquiring. The Pictorial Atlas is a stunning publication and lays any doubts to rest as soon as you open the two volumes. They are full of superb large photos, nearly all in colour and excellent quality – my response to opening the books was ‘wow!’. The books are less about passing trains (although there plenty of those!) rather focusing on the infrastructure, stations and all of the features that complete the S&D railway scene. Inevitably, some of the historic images are well-known, but the vast majority are new, and include many from little-known perspectives of the line. While I am not an expert in photo acknowledgements, every care appears to have been taken to credit them fully. Once past the helpful introduction, the text is laid out in the captions, which draws detailed attention to the images and avoids pages full of text. It is reassuring to know that the captions and photos have been checked by experts such as Mike Arlett and Peter Russell. Chris Osment advised on the extensive coloured signalling diagrams; these complement the very detailed largescale maps that appear throughout the book, explaining the whole line and branches all the way into Bournemouth. This is a massive achievement and really does bring the S&D to life, including so many aspects of the railway not covered in such a coherent and accessible way before. It may seem pricey, but there are two fully illustrated quality large format books, and it also comes post-free in the UK from Strathwood. This is surely a must-have for anyone with an interest in the S&D! David Grimwood - Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust With over 65% of the print run already sold within the first thirty days and no chance of a reprint due to the high costs of production, time for sitting on the fence for this one is limited. See for yourself. https://strathwood.co.uk/products/a-pictorial-atlas-of-the-somerset-dorset-joint-railway?_pos=1&_psq=atlas&_ss=e&_v=1.0 Kevin

RMweb Gold Strathwood Posted September 18, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 18, 2023 Arriving this morning we welcome the second issue of Eastern Times, for those who are new to this regular publication we still carry copies of the very first issue. EASTERN TIMES Issue 2 In this edition we have more excellent articles from our contributors starting with the elegant ‘R’ (D20) class 4-4-0 designed by Wilson Wordsell of the North Eastern Railway, the class giving service for over 50 years. This is followed by one man’s tale of how steam lingered on well after official withdrawal dates on his local line. We all have our favourite engines for many varied reasons, the elegant lines of A3 Spearmint are recalled and the reasons why it became a favourite explained. We then move to a more modern era and a signalman’s recollection of his working life at Broxbourne Junction in the late 70s and early 80s accompanied by excellent photographs of the trains he controlled. Then jumping to something completely different we feature Charlie, ‘The Last Shunting Horse’ who was the last of his kind to work on the railways, appropriately at Newmarket. Moving to the capital there is a feature of how the LNER were a large part of the modernisation of the transport system needed to meet the demands of long-suffering commuters in an ever-expanding metropolis before and after the Second World War. Most of us would have heard of renowned photographer H. C. Casserley, who would take an annual two-week holiday to travel and photograph the railway system, this usually covered a large area of the country. We follow one such trip he made in 1954 accompanied by many of the photographs taken at various locations throughout the trip, there are so many photos that we have had to split this article in two with the conclusion to appear in issue 3. Finally for this issue we head north and have a pictorial feature of West Hartlepool followed by a trip on ‘The Edinburgh Fast’. Introduction The Class R 4-4-0s of the North Eastern Railway Tales of a B17 Spotter No. 60100 Spearmint Broxbourne Junction Signal Box B1 at Banavie The Last Shunting Horse The 1935 LNER New Works Scheme The Man from the Pru – Part 1 West Hartlepool (51C) in pictures The Edinburgh Flyer The Headshunt 80 pages with 90+ black & white photographs printed on high quality glossy art paper SOFTBACK Kevin

RMweb Gold Strathwood Posted September 18, 2023 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 18, 2023 The takeover of not only Irwell Press earlier this year but also a move into large scale wholesale activities to the railway, tram, bus and trolleybus book trade to fill the void created when the previous wholesaler retired, has taken up a huge amount of time and investment so far this year. However, we are moving again on not only new Irwell Press titles but also our own titles once again. The latter ones are very dependent upon me finding the extra writing time. Meanwhile, we have moved Strathwood's stock holding of transport titles to over 1500+ different transport titles this year along with distributing them all to the trade as well from our Bedford warehouse. Hopefully, we will start to see the first of the new promised titles back from the printers soon. Thanks for your question. Kevin 1
