dagrizz
It is a town on a main line and as you can see, the main line does not go N-S.
RJS1977
Old Basing (Just west of Basingstoke)? The "Ba" on the extreme right was the giveaway, along with the clue about an E-W line. After drawing blanks on Bath and Badminton, Basingstoke was next...
dagrizz
Yes, though the "Ol Ba" was not Old Basing but Olivers Battery! Your turn now.
RJS1977
(The red dotted line is a footpath along a disused railway line - but which one?)
Bulleidboy
We're near Begelly in Pembrokeshire: The line was a tramway (4' gauge) built to take coal from the local mines (at Begelly & Thomas Chapel) to Saundersfoot Wharf. Here's the next square - this dancer is a bit late to catch a train, the colliery served by this line closed in 1982
dagrizz
I used to live in Bedworth so I got this without having to check a map.
dagrizz
Another duck, another main line.

My parents live near the bottom of your map and can see the old trackbed from their kitchen window (Saundersfoot Railway).
dagrizz
It's all gone quiet........the main line in the square does run in that general direction for much of its length.
eastwestdivide
That last duck and mainline from post 1158 is Ranskill, N of Retford. Got it in one, after taking the car over the LC looking for ducks and other birds, only to find a muddy track and not many ducks. Next... RJS1977
OK - hint time. This line is electrified at 25kV, and played a minor part in the history of British aviation.
dagrizz
Its near Cheadle Hulme and Manchester Airport
dagrizz
There is an aviation link to this next square - and it is not that the duck can fly.
RJS1977
Its near Cheadle Hulme and Manchester Airport That's right - both houses where I grew up are featured on the map! The railway line (ex LNWR Styal loop) was used as a landmark by the winner of the London - Manchester air race.
RJS1977
As to the latest square, it's where the Ascot-Aldershot line goes under the LSWR main line at Farnborough: Bizarrely, the conductor rail on one of the disused curves remained in place and energised long after the running rails were lifted as it provided an important electrical connection between the two routes! Now, where's this?

Bulleidboy
Its been warmer today so off to the seaside..... You don't need to go to the seaside to find the warmth - Doncaster was the warmest place in W. Europe yesterday! Anyway, your square is near Torbay: Which town is this dancer in??
