Andy LMRG
Not quite what you asked for but we were also novices having modelled in the distant past and decided to go DCC and indeed some automation. We have a web site www.lermg.org and while I'm sure the books are a safer bet you might like to look and see what we did and to some extent learnt the hard (and wrong way). There is a response page if you wanted to ask us a question. Either way - good luck and enjoy.
Nigelcliffe
An online (or print it yourself) option is Mick Moignard's "Digital Topics" articles which originally appeared in the ScaleFour Society magazine. http://www.mickmoignard.com/MickMoignard/mickmoignard.nsf/dx/MickMoignardsDigitalTopics.pdf/$file/MickMoignardsDigitalTopics.pdf - Nigel

Ron Ron Ron
This question has come up quite regularly over the years since RMweb started out. Here's a copy of a post I made in December just gone.Note: some of the links may need updating as one or two may have changed. Here's some recommended reading, both books and web sites; plus a plug for a couple of DVD's..Books.An excellent book (purchased by many members of this forum), is"ASPECTS OF MODELLING: Digital Command Control" by Ian Morton. It was published early 2007.This book is very good, uses simple language and is written from a British perspective. Ideal for beginners too.http://www.ianallanp...shing.com/produ ... t=0&page=1http://www.amazon.co...Aspects-Modelli ... 379&sr=1-1A more recent addition is..."A Practical Introduction to Digital Command Control for Railway Modellers" by Nigel BurkinThis UK title was released in July 2008.Also a useful book, but IMHO it isn't as well structured as the Ian Morton title.http://www.crowood.c...8+1+84797+020+6http://www.amazon.co...Practical-Intro ... 525&sr=1-1Another good book is "DCC Made Easy: Digital Command Control for Your Model Railroad" by Lionel StrangThis is written from an American perspective and was published in 2003.http://www.amazon.co...DCC-Made-Easy-R ... 596&sr=1-1DVD's.There are two "Right Track" DVD's too.Right Track 8 - An Introduction to DCCRight Track 9 - Practical Aspects of DCChttp://www.model-railway-dvd.co.uk/http://www.brmodelli...o.uk/store/disp ... erID=14092Internet Web Sites. If it's of any interest to you, Internet Web sites are plentiful. These links are worth following......http://www.brian-lambert.co.uk/DCC.htm (...of RMweb fame)http://tonystrains.c...rimer/index.htm (the excellent Tony's Trains site is full of useful info and links - highly recommended)http://www.dccconcepts.com/ (see the DCC info and advice pages)http://www.traintec..../new_page_2.htmhttp://www.wiringfordcc.com/ (n.b. this is a massive site with lots of menus to explore) CML electronics DCC guide.http://en.wikipedia....Command_Controlhttp://www.dccwiki.com/Main_PageAlso some manufacturer's web sites have a lot of info:http://www.digital-plus.de/e/index.php - Lenz home sitehttp://www.lenz.com - Lenz US site (a bit more detail)http://www.dynamisdcc.com/index.php - About Dynamis and some DCC FAQ'shttp://www.digitrax.com/http://www.ncedcc.com/There's quite a lot more out on the web, but I hope that helps for now?Happy reading. shedman
Ian Morton's book is an excellent way to start. Mine is very well thumbed and I still refer to it. Nigel Burkin's book is more technical and will be useful as you get more advanced. I agree that it is not as well structured.
