Race against time to reopen final part of private railway line

<snip>Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is in the process of re-opening five miles of track, which will eventually connect Wirksworth with main line rail services.

So far, Ecclesbourne Valley Railway's volunteers have replaced 4,500 sleepers on the line but need to replace a further 1,300 at a cost of £32,000 before September.

The group has now set up a website,  http://www.one-last-push.org for people to pledge their support.</snip>

That's about £25 a sleeper I guess

<snip>The railway wants to complete the project before September because of changes to how "new" railways are inspected and approved.

The industry is moving from the traditional approval system operated by Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate (HMRI) to the use of qualified independent assessors.

The HMRI service is free, but independent assessors will charge for their services</snip>

Any financial help will be gratefully accepted. The permanent way team are really pulling the stops out. We are changing 90-100 sleepers per week. Record for one day now stands at 36. So please, please help us if you can and then join us for the reopening, hopefully on the planned date of 8th April 2011. remember the web address: http://www.one-last-push.org

Even better join us as a member see http://www.evra.org.uk where you can also check up on progress.

Isn't that a bit like tidying up your house before the cleaner comes in?

No. You need to get a rough level and make sure that there is enough ballast on the track bed for the Tamper to deal with. If the there is not enough ballast the Tamper has nothing to work with. As the Tamper is going to cost around £15,000 to bring in, we cannot afford to waste it's time!

£25 per sleeper? Seems a bit steep. Are they puttng in wooden or concrete ones?

Unknown Warrior - If you are after any conrete sleepers for flat bottom rail then the Midland Railway Butterley has plenty that aren't of any use to us unless we start buying tons of flat bottom rail. Contact Butterley office and ask for Alan Calladine if your're interested. I'm sure the MRB could let some go for the right price. Could certainly do with the money right now......

As we are spot resleepering we have to replace like with like. As all the sleepers we are replacing are wooden they have to be wooden. Concretes are deeper (and heavier!). If we can raise enough money we may completely relay one stretch on concretes, in which case we will need to hire a mini-digger to dig out the track bed and of course replace all the sleepers, not just the ones that need replacing.

Spot resleepering concretes is really back breaking work. We had to replace some on the continuous welded section between Idridgehay and Shottle. Took six of us to lift the sleeper and post it into position. Not helped by the position being in a shallow cutting, so the land rose away from the track bed!

Thanks for the contact anyway. We might use it!

Thats alright. I know what you mean about spot re - sleepering. We've recently done the west end crossovers coming into Swanwick. Even harder when the timbers are twice the length. Whats more annoying is, the way you got the old one out, when you try and slide the new one in it just doesn't want to know :D

The good news for our line is that our 10mph speed restriction is slowly but surely being lifted. We can run at 25mph all the way to marker 135 now (just past Golden Valley bridge) so hopefully within a few weeks we can get back down to bridge 23 where the original 10mph slack has been for the past 10 years due to bad drainage and flooding.

New runround at Duffield. Work has now started on the platform and next week we will be "jacking and packing" to get the formation ready for tamping.

Looking at that shot I can foresee a whole lot of"NIMBY" complaints when you run trains past there backyard!! Nice to see it all coming together so soon though.

We are already thinking about how to fire the steam engines to cause minimum polution!

However we were already working on the line before the new flats were built - would that we could have afforded to buy the land they are built on when it came up for sale. Also the line was never closed, only mothballed and we gained our Light Railway Order in 1996.

Spot resleepering proceeds a pace - now managing over 100 per week. Highest total for one day was 51!

Keep up to date at :

We still need to raise quite a bit of cash to finish the job on time!

unless you have a Stoneblower to hand ;)

At Middleton Railway we were discussing this in the mess room once and deviced a suitable(!!!) alternative that would not creat all of the black smoke. As boilers are fitted with tubes it was suggested to put nuclear power rods down each of the tubes. Only downside would be that the driver & fireman would need lead lined suits!

Be careful if you use one of the stone blowers. One went up our Swanwick branch a few years ago, something went wrong and it left a massive hole resulting in the track sinking in that area. We didn't have enough ballast to refill it.

Copied from the EVR website Latest News

"Austerity locomotive "The Duke" arrived from Rowsley having followed a support coach from the 8F locomotive group down the Station approach. We welcome both these new arrivals and their teams which will fulfil a most useful addition to our own Dream Steam Team.

"The Duke" is from the same mold as the J94s that were used in the latter days of the Cromford & High Peak Railway and will be capable of working steam hauled trains between Wirksworth and Duffield. The locomotive has been put into the Maintenance Facility for a quick cosmetic repaint with a view to it being a static feature on display during the Santa train period. Restoration will start in earnest in 2011 alongside the continuing work on Henry Ellison.

The decision of the 8F group to relocate to Wirksworth brings a whole wealth of new skills, and manpower, to enhance the work of Bob Gibbens and his team which will make Wirksworth a continuing centre of excellence for steam locomotive restoration. The iconic maroon liveried 48624 is unlikely to visit us in the near future with existing commitments on the Churnet Valley Railway followed by a contract at the Great Central Railway but there is the tantalising prospect of occasional visits when we have more of the infrastructure necessary to support its operation in place."

Suddaby and I were informed that they had plans to run a loco with a 'suitable tender' on the re-opening to Duffield or shortly thereafter. Let's hope that they get in a suitably large stock of BLACK paint to go with it ;)

The "suitable loco with a tender" is Standard 2 78019 from GCR, which is due at Wirksworth late March and staying until late May. The opening weekend is 8th-10th April.

Essentially the road needs to be a close as you can get it before tamping - tampers (especially Matisas) can produce huge lifts when required but it 's not always the best way to do things!

And nothing annoys tamper crews more than an engineer or a TO saying "can we go through that again?"!!

Who's doing your tamping?

Thats what I was wondering, having seen photos of several railways lay track straight onto the ground and then add the ballast later.
