I'm pretty sure the stone paved approach at Temple Meads is well back into your era and before and drain is clearly visible here:

and another here:

I remember similar at Weston-super-Mare Station front approach, none of which is meant to imply that I'm particularly familiar up that close with gutters! 😈

Thanks for these - clearly storm drains were being fitted to some station forecourts - my suspicion is that very important places like Paddington and Temple Meads would have gotten these from the very earliest days along with hard surfaces, while branch lines would have been much lower priority. I will keep a look out for photos of branch station roadway drains but so far I have not seen any in my era.

I think what you see on the left hand side is a 'bridge' across the stream.

Yes that does seem to be what it is. So no drains anywhere at that time.

Saturday is a wise choice - there's no trains through Eastleigh on Sunday...

I hadn't looked at Sunday trains - I won't bother now!

Completely off topic but the boss is tidying up. She wants to get rid of a bunch of old one inch Ordnance Survey maps and I wondered if any RMWeb people might like them as they are all pre Beeching and some are pre-war. If anyone wants any of them please PM me and I will pop them in the post. What we have are:

At the upcoming Missenden weekend I may get around to tackling some of my stash of etched wagon kits. For these I need wheel sets and before spending out wondered if anyone could confirm this:

Cordon tank wagons: https://www.cambrianmodelrail.co.uk/store/OO-Gauge-12mm-3-hole-Disc-Wheels-p94293655

Open C tube wagon: https://www.cambrianmodelrail.co.uk/store/OO-Gauge-12mm-8-Spoked-plain-Wheels-p94276288

CC3 six-wheel tool wagon:  https://www.cambrianmodelrail.co.uk/store/OO-Gauge-12mm-8-Spoked-plain-Wheels-p94276288

Early six wheel Siphons: https://www.cambrianmodelrail.co.uk/store/OO-Gauge-14mm-Mansell-Wheels-p550767316

thanks

They all appear to be correct in type and diameter

Number one, pictures showing disc wheels on pp210/211 in A history of GWR goods wagons.

Open C spoked wheels, p149 as above.

CC3 tool van, 6 wheel spoked, p50 All about GWR iron minks.

Early slat sided siphons had Mansell wheels, can't find the picture at present but it's what I fitted to my three.

Most (all?) Cordons were built on superannuated coach chassis so would have had 3'6" wheels - disc or Mansell, hard to say which.

Thanks chaps. So Siphons and Cordons I will go 14mm Mansell while for Open C and CC3 I will go 12mm 8 spoke. I am hoping I may get these at the Southampton show next weekend. Then I can do battle with the etched brass. I have heard that the Jidenco kits are not straightforward but hopefully Tony Gee and co will keep me on the straight and narrow.

I plan to park one of the Cordons right down at the end of Helston near the carriage shed but I wonder if there is a picture anywhere of a Cordon coupled up to a carriage with gas lights - I would be interested to know how it was done.

For the Siphons I need to work out how to model wicker baskets with rascally rabbits in them.

Could you borrow an old laundry basket similar to the rabbits ones above, and 3D scan it. I think you had previously mentioned you had access to scan facilities. All the similar baskets around here are now in the hands of interior decor shops, house dressers and the people who live in the nearby big houses one of whom is currently advertising for a cleaner at £18 / hour paid in cash.  Perhaps I should take-up cleaning in return for model shop vouchers and send HMRC the occasional 5 plank wagon so they don't tax it out of my pension.

Phil @Harlequin can you remind me where it was you posted about grills with coal over for speaker covers. I am trying to recall what form / source of mesh you used for your rather neat trick.

thanks

Hi Andy,

Search for "Lode Star", "Killarney" or "Dean goods" in the DCC sound section.

I use stainless steel insect mesh and I'm convinced that having the sound come out directly at you makes a big difference.

Thanks - found it again. Where do you get this mesh from? I see on eBay I can get six inch squares for around £5 which have holes about 1mm square:

What do people think of this colour and texture for the road surface at Helston in 1930 - an unmetalled macadm. maybe at Helston it would have been a bit smoother?

http://www.helstonhistory.co.uk/w-f-iveys-forgotten-days/changes-around-helston/ has a bit about the Helston Road Repair Gang -  with the information given, you could go and find an authentic bit of stone and hit it with a big hammer until you have a sample of what was put on Helston roads.  I'm wondering if the stone was out-lying pieces of Tregonning-Godolphin Granite.  If you wanted the gang could even form the basis for a little cameo group on the model -  can't help wondering whether the picture shows child labour or the draw of steam engines!

Re: Bunny baskets -  Would the large ones from the Hornby R8677 OO Gauge Wicker Baskets set be the right size? Sets sell on ebay from time to time for about a tenner each.

Thanks for that. So this kind of colour: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tregonning_Granite

and I will keep watch for some Hornby baskets - I did not know they did them.

That sounds like a great idea. I've some very old Polypropylene shade cloth which was not that great in its original role, too stiff, but very handy for this, No risk of shorting the speaker either.

Useful reference to the DCC Sound Forum, didn't realise it existed!

I have made a start on the villa that sits on the corner of Godolphin Road and Parc an Harvey. The idea is to 3D print the walls, but use laser cut card for the slates which I prefer. I am not sure how much of the interior will actually be visible but I have added rudimentary stairs and bannisters just in case. Window frames will also be laser cut card as will the external doors.
