Signalling at Marchwood

I can't post actual times but as any local enthusiast or resident knows the best chance of seeing trains is around 7 and 09-10:00 hrs. There are later trains some days but that depends each week.

Hi Peter

Just found your post. How have you got on with the signalling? I found your post after reading Allen Jackson’s book, Signalling and Signal Boxes along the LSWR, which as a good section on Marchwood. Have you see this book?

The signal shown on the front cover is at Marchwood and is of the type I need for my layout. I was wondering if you had managed to find any details?

Cheers

Graham

Ok this might be of use as I’ve found my photos from the days when I was the resident and still had to change the oil lamps once a week.

from the signal, this was condemned in 2001 and replaced with a new post as the SR lattice resembled filo pastry. Reassuring when you were carrying lamps up it each week!

According to this month's 'Modern Railways', it would seem that there might be more activity on the branch soon. The MoD has said it is investing £45 million for infra-structure work on the Military Port in order that it might accommodate civilian as well as military traffic. They seem to be aiming for a broad portfolio of traffic, including timber, new and scrap steel.

Note the full drags so you could run trains in from both directions at once. Marchwood kept this because of the dangerous goods traffic.

A useful set of photos. Of course there is the (very) high speed run which is probably lurking somewhere on the BBC news site.

I am currently just finishing  the second of the girder bracket signals, the other one was completed last year along with one of the other bracket signals.

The lower safety bar on the older bracket platforms were only added in 2001 as they decided the wooden decked ones were dangerous when wet or icy. They also wanted to introduce a token platform for the loop side rather than you standing on the yellow non slip pads. I pointed out that to access the platform you had to walk across in front of the moving train therefore being less safe than standing on the platform line crossing! You also couldn’t then start back to the box until the train had passed to put the signals back and then get to the gates. With the standard arrangement you could be back in the box, and dry on wet days, ready to put the signals back ;)

Thanks, the photos are great. I am particularly interested in MW23 & 24. The interior of the signal box is also very interesting!

Hi,

I wasn't asked to build MW23 and MW24 but I have built similar ones in the past albeit not quite as short.

I think that this is the type of bracket you will need from Wizard. He also does whitemetal railbuilt posts, you'd need 2 or you can make them from rail if you prefer (stronger option). Please ignore the MAS, both lights on to show they work only.

Any good ideas on how to make the 4 rail post that doesn’t involve soldering?

Cheers

Graham

You could get a couple of castings from Wizard and use superglue I suppose, personally I prefer proper rail and solder, it's much stronger.

I have got the castings and was thinking of gluing them but not sure what to use to space them apart.

If you do not have the drawings to hand, you should be able to use the bracket etchings as a guide with the aid of a photo or two.
