RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 2, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 2, 2021 New project - a UTA MED unit in the original green livery using Worsley Works etched sides and ends fixed to modified Dapol Stanier 60’ coaches. Start made on the centre coach. Cheers Darius 2
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 2, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 2, 2021 Centre coach sides and chassis completed. The MED roof profile is quite flat so new roofs will be made from plasticard. Cheers Darius 4

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 3, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2021 2 hours ago, kirley said: Great result, can you give more information on how you did them please? Hi Kieran, Essentially I stuck full coach width strips of 1mm thick plasticard together to build up the roof profile using the brass carriage ends as a roof profile guide. Each strip was cut over width and once the whole roof had been done the assembly was sanded to shape. I used Humbrol filler to smooth off the visible lamination marks. I will post more pictures of this process for the driving coach construction. Cheers Darius 1

We moved to Belfast in 1978 so I never got to ride in a MED - just the 70 and 80 Class units. Cheers Darius

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 3, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2021 Roof built up using strips of 1mm thick plasticard. Strips cut over width for sanding to profile. Space created for the decoder. Roof then sanded to profile. Cheers Darius 4 1
RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted May 3, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2021 A good build and I like the way of extending the sides to give a better cab slope. The doors look just right with the 1mm plasticard spacers . Footsteps were prominent as were the clever but exposed step lighting - only recently seen in UK as a requirement for new builds ! coach 122 on the Ffestiniog Railway fitted as a trial a few years back. Roof certainly a good way to make the flat profile - later conversions of older stock open up other options/ problems! Robert 1
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 3, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 3, 2021 Thanks Robert. The plan is to add the footsteps and step lights after the main body painting has been completed. The roof is still a bit too flat so more sanding is needed. Cheers Darius

kirley
Following your method of construction with interest, I see you are only using the bottom of the donor coach and removing all of the plastic sides.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 7, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 7, 2021 Hi Kieran, Yes, there is not much left of the original coach superstructure. The etched side windows and original coach windows don’t line up at all and, what with the inset doors, it was easiest to remove the whole coach sides. The roofs and interiors have gone into the spares box. Cheers Darius
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 7, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 7, 2021 (edited) Added the edge strip between the roof and the coach sides using 0.5mm sheets of plasticard. And roof ventilators added. Cheers Darius Edited May 7, 2021 by Darius43

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 8, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 8, 2021 Second driving motor coach assembly pretty much completed bar the cab face details and the interior. I re-profiled the cab front to give it a more pronounced rake as it looked too flat. Painting next. Cheers Darius
