RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted June 15, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2021 (edited) Latest project - a NI Railways CAF 3000 unit using 3D printed resin bodies produced by m0rris of RMWeb and obtained via eBay. The plan is to adapt Bachmann old 158 unit underframes to fit these bodies. Painting will be a mix of Halfords and Phoenix enamels airbrushed on with decals by Railtec already obtained. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted June 15, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2021 Coach bodies primed. The finish of the printed bodies is very good. Some light sanding and finishing required to the cab ends only. Cheers Darius

I travelled on a CAF unit from Portrush to Londonderry and back about 16 years ago and found them to be quite good. Do they have a reputation that I am not aware of? pat141
I was in one that had a very noisy AC fan that rattled away the whole journey. And they announce every station for the entire journey every time it stopped at a station.
RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted June 16, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 16, 2021 Darius, The CAF units and like the 22000s on IE are seen as "devil incarnate" by some railway followers and modellers for having seen of the halcyon days of slam doors and locos - all rose tinted stuff of course. No doubt even older followers of steam thought the same of MED and other older units ! The experience of the journey might well be better but inane announcements and growling engines under what could have been a quiet coach does dampen the enthusiasm, even if track engineers like the lower axle load. I guess stress crack gremlins all need some where to live, especially Spanish ones !! Robert 1
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted June 16, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 16, 2021 Trial fit of the chassis to a driving and centre car using a Bachmann Class 170 chassis - better looking bogies than a 158. The fit of the cast metal centre car chassis is very tight and the molded ledges in the coach body were at the wrong level and had to be cut away. This left smaller ledges at each door position that were scraped with a knife blade to increase the gap/depth and give a flush fit to the chassis. The fit is so tight that a split has occurred in the resin body at one end. Some grinding of the metal chassis sides and end will be needed to ease the fit. The chassis side valences were temporarily fixed in place with black tack for the photos. Fitting the driving coach chassis is easier as the Bachmann chassis is plastic rather than metal. I cut away the bogie chassis sections and sanded them to fit flush in the coach body using the molded ledges to locate them. I made a separate centre chassis from plasticard with the molded side valences fixed temporarily with black tack. Cheers Darius 5

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted June 17, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 17, 2021 Thanks Kieran. The sanding did remove some of the fine detail around the light clusters but that can hopefully be restored by careful painting. pat141
Very nice. How do you paint the doors?
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted June 20, 2021 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 20, 2021 Hi Pat. I masked and painted the window blue patches and the lower door panels. I then removed the masks to the upper door panels (leaving the rest of the masks in place) and fixed some cheap masking tape so that it draped down from the roof stopping about 5mm above the lower door panels and not stuck down so that the edge of the mask was clear of the doors. I then airbrushed the blue paint with the nozzle level above the edge of the mask, which gives the feathered paint effect on the doors. I’ll take some pictures when I paint the driving coaches, which should be clearer than my clumsy description above. Cheers Darius

RMweb Premium JDW Posted June 20, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 20, 2021 That looks great. I'm very tempted by the 175 or 185 that he's produced too, but I think any of the 185 liveries might be a bit complex to paint, and the 175 is a bit out of area for me! Great build though, nice to see something a bit different. I had the same crack/split issues a few times on my 323s, the printed material seems very brittle, I imagine these are the same? Actually the material is quite resilient and the split was due to the metal chassis forcing the coach sides apart at the ends. The material sands well so I was able to sand thin the 2mm thick sides at the interface with the chassis to enable a better fit.
