Gottardo
Was this the "Open Prison" version where they use an ordinary BDt?
Nearholmer
So, do people get sentenced to six months hard tourism, being forced to ride around the mountains looking at stunning scenery, or is this prison-to-prison transport? And, are Swiss criminals so exceptionally heavy as to require two locos? I struggle to think that one is there to cover for the possible failure of the other, given the exemplary standards of maintenance of everything in Switzerland. 1
Michael Hodgson
Well if there's an escape, Interpol can call on our boys in blue ... Oh dear ... https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/252162/British-Transport-Police-train-vandalised

Not sure, but the second loco looks to have its pantographs down.
DGO
Normal Swiss Prison trains I thought were windowless, they get used for cooperative non violent prison transfers, to courts, between prisons or to hospitals, also for deportations, the windowless van has separate cells plus a toilet, it's thought that train transfers are more humane than getting in a cramped van which may have to deal with traffic jams.

Fat Controller
Italian Railways had (and may be still have) custom built multiple-units for such passengers.

Hard to google that, when most of the results I manage to get are from the film Von Ryan's Express!
RMweb Premium 31A Posted October 14, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 14, 2021 A bit more about it here: https://www.indonewyork.com/breaking/Where-is-the-Jail-Train-stops-daily--h6432.html You need to make considerable allowance for the translation, I'm afraid!

I was thinking of that myself, but I think I read in a Swiss mag a little while ago that the EMU car had been withdrawn (last of its type?) so perhaps the loco hauled version is what they use now instead.
RMweb Gold phil_sutters Posted October 14, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 14, 2021 (edited) It looks a bit more comfy than this one - http://www.ipernity.com/doc/312383/31083095/in/album/1196268 even in its recent reincarnation http://www.ipernity.com/doc/312383/38881420/in/album/620941 I was once on a train from W-S-M to Paddington, when the communication cord (when it still was a cord) was pulled in Box Tunnel. No waiting until the next station in those days. We stopped in the tunnel. The guard came through explaining that a prisoner had tried to escape from his escorts. We then proceeded, but as soon as we came out of the tunnel the cord was pulled again and the prisoner was off across the fields with the prison officers in pursuit. We went on our way but I never heard of the outcome. Edited October 14, 2021 by phil_sutters
Nearholmer
When landward fortifications were being built around the back of the Medway Towns to defend Chatham Dockyard in the late C19th, there was a long 18” gauge railway to take materials and convict labourers to the sites. The coaches on that were long bogie-vehicles with compartment-style seating, but the doors to each compartment were of the iron bar, zoo cage type. Even less luxurious than the ones Phil shows.

They were in storage in Bologna until last year when they were offered for sale, but I can't find anything to say they've been sold or scrapped.
