Final railway photo of the year - 2021

Recommended Posts

The last railway photo I took was when changing trains at Taunton after my second trip up to Okehampton on the newly re-opened Dartmoor Line. It is not the best shot, being a hand-held photo in the dark, and I might have had a cider or two on the way back!

At Taunton 158747 has just arrived on a service from Cardiff Central.  22/11/2021

cheers

A final picture for 2021. An unidentified class 377 heads south across a very damp Arun flood plain earlier today. The South Downs lurk in the mist, and the remnants of the regular flooding is evident (the river itself is the middle of the bands of water towards the foreground); a reminder to all developers and planners that flood plains are liable to do what is says on the tin! The entire field this side of the train was under water a day or so previously...

My only train photo of the year, and not a very good one, taken yesterday near Fenny Stratford. 37521 topping an ECS move of a white and purple (Crossrail?) EMU to Wembley from, I think, Derby. There was another match coach and a slightly less retro 37 at the tail.

This was mine (as seen in my work thread) I do have 2 more shots after this on my camera reel but they are stills from a video I took so this is the final ‘proper’ picture of 2021 of 66709 in Tyseley en route to small heath

Last picture for me was back in October, catching the NMT at Hurstbourne Viaduct near Andover.

In dying light, ex-VTEC power car 43290 leads whilst 43299 trails out of sight, as they work 1Q23 Salisbury to Reading Triangle Sidings on October 21st.

My final one was the 16:09 from Charlbury on 31st December heading off towards London Paddington, having just crossed the Evenlode river bridge.  Train conveniently obscures the view of the sewage works!

DB Cargo 66051 'Maritime Intermodal Four' passing though Deighton on 28th December 2021 heading west towards Huddersfield with 6M16, Tees New Yard to Knowsley Freight Terminal, empty binliner wagons.

This working is normally booked via the Calder Valley line but engineering work around Manchester Victoria meant that it was running to a VAR schedule via Huddersfield and Standedge Tunnel.

Certainly doesn't look like the December weather most of us have had. Are you sure that wasn't October?

On 5th December I managed to escape the house ( trying to legally avoid Mrs SM42 who had returned a positive test the day before) and find a quiet place to pass some time, I ended up at Northwood Halt on the SVR

The day was very dull and the phone camera struggled a bit as something run on  steam trundled through on a Santa Special.

Several hours later I also tested positive thus confined to barracks and with Chritmas prep delayed, no more photo opportunities were available in 2021

It certainly looks balmy for a winter shot but there was a brisk and chilly wind blowing in off the Atlantic. I was glad to get moving again after waiting for the shot!

Activities were curtailed due to having to isolate in the run-up to Christmas, therefore my last photo of 2021 is from 13th December - 59102 passing Dalston Kingsland on the North London line (645X 10:53 Chelmsford Reception - Acton T.C.).

It was a delivery move for a white and red class 720 EMU, running as 5Q90 10:22 Derby Litchurch Lane to Wembley.  The rear loco was 37688, the full consist (including barrier vehicles) being:

37521 + 6376 + 720530 + 6377 6394 6393 + 37688

Thanks. I'm not colour blind, but the lighting was already terrible, and it was a "grab shot" as I was walking across a muddy field. The emankment is lined with trees except for the bridge, and I only twigged a train was coming at the last moment. Excuses, excuses ......
