Michael Hodgson
I thought breakdown cranes lived at loco sheds rather than goods yards, and that rail-mounted cranes for yards were sent as and when required to stations that needed better lifting facilities than whatever any fixed installation could currently cope with? Presumably they would be returned to a large marshalling yard when not required. Fixed crane capacity is shown in the RCH Handbook of Stations, and I have seen details of breakdown crane allocations in some Sectional Appendices. S&T and other engineers needed cranes too

RMweb Premium cctransuk Posted February 23, 2022 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 23, 2022 Just now, Ian G said: General Rail mounted cranes, steam & hand Ian G I think that it is safe to say that an all-encompassing, definitive list does not exist - unless someone knows differently. As with most matters to do with railways, research, research, research is the answer. CJI.
hmrspaul
10 hours ago, Ian G said: General Rail mounted cranes, steam & hand Ian G The Tatlow series on cranes has a lot of information on allocations which did, of course, change all the time. And as has been mentioned the smaller cranes were designed to move between yards as they were needed to cover for yards where fixed cranes were either absent or of too low a capacity for the job at hand.
