Diesel Brake Tender

Thanks Mark.

I obtained a couple of the rtr rounded ones at Warley a few years ago and was inspired to build this one by an article in the latest Hornby mag.  The article used a 3D printed body but I thought the flat-sided version should be relatively easy to make using plasticard.

Cheers

Great result! Reminds me that over 50 years ago (ouch) I made a rounded version out of solid balsa wood, mounted on a pair of Playcraft BR Mark 1 bogies picked up in Woolworths for pennies (Woolies used to get Playcraft stuff in only for Christmas). It was, er, rather lightweight for a brake tender but at least it didn't overload my Magnadhesion-equipped Tri-ang diesels......!

The Fox Decals carrier film is applied around each “word” in each decal set rather than as a block, which makes them prone to distorting and “folding under” on application.

Fortunately the film is quite strong so the errant decals can be recovered and re-applied with care.  I have since sprayed the decal sheet with a coat of acrylic varnish to avoid a repeat of these issues on future brake tenders.

Weathering will be next after I have built another brake tender.

Cheers

A very nice looking finished job Darius. Did you have any detailed dimensional drawings for this, as I feel like it is something I can manage?

I did try and build a Genesis kit of one once but it was a sod to put together and was out of gauge when completed so it became ballast weight material!  These Stratford built brake tenders were unique and I saw quite a few around the Temple Mills area many years ago.

Hi BrushVeteran,

Fantastic photo - thanks for posting it.

I used the drawing on this website (no idea if it is accurate but the proportions looked right) and scaled the body size to the dimensions of the Gresley bogies that I had.

Cheers

Oh well now, I do like that! I don't think I remember seeing a pic of one of this type before, looks like some kind of armoured wagon from WW1! Excellent job Darius, another one to add onto my 'one day' list

All the best

James
