Bulleidboy100
I have a Hornby Schools Class (St.Pauls) in lined black which I wish to rename/number. The shed code on the loco is 74E (St Leonards) - it would appear that Eton 30900, Winchester 30901, Wellington 30902 and Charterhouse 30903 were all at St.Leonards in about 1958. If I were to use one of these names/numbers would the nameplate be black or red? Thank you.
Steamport Southport
This is where finding a colour photo comes in. Officially a black engine should have a red nameplate. But it didn't always happen. Some on Colour Rail's website. You can't link to the individual photos but there are loads. https://colourrail.co.uk/gallery/steam 30900 9/1959 lined black, black plates. Ref No 311845 30901 1960 green, red plates Ref No 340108 30901 1960 green, red plates Ref No313409 30903 1952 lined black red plates Ref BRS415 Also try Transport Treasury and Rail Online. https://www.transporttreasury.com/f1071200523 https://www.rail-online.co.uk/p518773543 Jason
RMweb Gold Nick C Posted May 12, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 12, 2022 (edited) Remember the different chimneys - 30900, 30901 & 30909 had Lematiere blastpipes (large chimney), 30902 & 30903 didn't. 30925, currently in late-crest green, has a red plate on one side and black on the other... Not just different chimneys. The first ten (30900-30909) had lower cab windows than the later builds. Hornby's newer tooling offers both window positions. So renumbering St Pauls (30909) would have to be to a lower numbered loco.
Bulleidboy100
Many thanks for the help and suggestions. It looks as though it will be 30900 Eton or 30901 Winchester. I have not tried the Railtec 3D shedcodes yet - I have three Merchant Navy Class that need 72B (Salisbury c.1960/61) - Hornby have not produced a M/N with this shed code - a loco with the correct shed code prior to renaming/numbering means one less job to do. Steamport Southport
Easy to change the shedcode. The Hornby ones are just printed. Just gently file/sand it down a tiny bit and glue the new one on top. Or even a little scrape with a blade. You could possible use a fibre glass brush instead. You just need something for the glue to "key" to. I prefer the brass ones myself. Available from various sources, will recommend the 247 Developments ones. Jason
Bulleidboy100
Thanks Jason - I have just been scrolling through Colour Rail (thanks for the reference). The Schools class is one I picked up cheaply without the sound fitted (I already have that one), so I need to change its identity.
