The Scottish Diesel & Electric Group (SDEG) is proud to announce the release of the second volume of Scotland’s Diesel Fleet in Detail - Class 47/4s

This volume of Scotland’s Diesel Fleet in Detail brings together a series of comprehensive notes on the class 47/4 fleet, principally produced as a modelling reference source for projects dating between the 1980s and 1990s. A review of the class’s association with Scotland from their first appearance in 1963 up to the present day and an outline of the main details and technical variations within the fleet are included. These notes highlight points of interest which are frequently referred to within the individual loco reviews. The main section focuses on the locos defined as the ‘classic’ class 47/4s to be based in Scotland, principally from the early 1980s through to late 1992, with a full review of each class member in terms of detail and livery variations over the period. In addition, brief overviews of the multitude of other class 47/4s to have had shorter spells based on the Scottish Region have been compiled with notes on each locomotive’s condition during these periods.

The book has been compiled by Andrew Donnelly and edited by Graeme Moyes, with invaluable contributions from SDEG members and various experts familiar with the class, including renowned author and class 47 specialist, Ian McLean. Photographic coverage of the class during the period in focus is lavishly provided by a number of well-known photographers covering the kaleidoscope of liveries carried by the class, numerous detail variations and some unusual workings through largely previously unpublished material. Based on feedback received and the success of the first volume on the class 26 fleet, this volume has been increased to 120 pages and is printed on heavier, high-quality paper, with the same 25cm square format and hardback cover.

Scotland’s Diesel Fleet in Detail; Class 47/4s is exclusively available from the SDEG and the cost of the book is £30 plus £6.50 p&p for UK addresses. This is the same price as the class 26 volume, despite the increased page count. For non-UK addresses the postage and packing will be charged at cost. The book is self-funded and printed by the SDEG, with profits to be used for future volumes and to support the group’s modelling activities. Payment for the book is by bank transfer only. Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash, cheques or credit card payments. For details of how to order and pay or for a non-UK postal quotation, please email us at books@sdeg.info

We will endeavour to fulfil your order as quickly as possible, but please note that we all have full time jobs, so some delay may occur with posting times. It is anticipated that pre-paid orders only will be available to collect in-person from the SDEG layout stands at the Perth Model Railway Exhibition (25th & 26th June 2022, Dewars Centre, Perth) and DEMU Showcase (23rd & 24th July 2022, Sutton Coldfield Town Hall, Upper Clifton Rd, Sutton Coldfield). Please note that only confirmed pre-paid orders will be available for collection at these events, no sales transactions can be taken on the day. There is no charge for in-person collection. If the books are not received before Perth show, then postage will need to be paid as normal.

A small number of Scotland’s Diesel Fleet in Detail; Class 26s are still available for purchase with ordering and collection/postage arrangements as noted above. The SDEG would like to thank the many contributors to this initiative along with those who have purchased the first volume!

PRINTING OF THE BOOK IS CURRENTLY UNDERWAY AND EXPECTED TO BE RECEIVED FOR IN-PERSON COLLECTION FROM PERTH MODEL SHOW. IF THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE, ORDERS WILL BE POSTED OUT IN THE USUAL MANNER AND POSTAGE COSTS WILL APPLY.

IT IS EXPECTED THAT NORMAL POSTAL ORDERS WILL BE SENT OUT DURING THE LAST WEEK OF JUNE.

Please email us at books@sdeg.info

Just a quick update in that we have been advised that printing of the class 47/4 book is slightly delayed and that they won't be delivered in time for Perth show. Hopefully, we should have them in the first week of July, ready for posting out.

Hi @158722, sorry to bother you but I wondered if the books had been dispatched now?

I don't really like to ask, because it sounds like the height of impatience on my part(!), but I'm going away for a period and I wondered if I needed to ask my neighbour to expect a parcel on my behalf while I'm away.

(I don't think it'll fit my letter box and my local sorting office keeps inconvenient hours.)

Thanks, Wex Cel.

Mine has arrived, in fact it arrived a couple of days ago but the postie hid it and I didn't notice. Thank Gawd it didn't rain...

From a brief flick through, another winner here.

What's next?

Good grief, what a postie!

The edition covering the ScotRail Express era of 47/7s and DBSO later this year is the plan!

Update on the class 47/4s

We are down to the last dozen of the first print run! Thanks to everyone who has supported this initiative and the positive feedback received!

Any orders received over the next couple of days 'should' be able to be posted out by Friday, but after that there will be a delay of a fortnight due to annual holidays. A second print run will be underway during this time, so more copies should be available  during the first week of August. Copies paid for collection at DEMU on 23/24th July have been set aside ready for the event.

It seems unlikely that we will have further copies of the class 26s in time for despatch to DEMU for collection, so these might have to be posted out. Still a couple of days to go though!

Received my copy last week courtesy of my wife. Another great book and an absolute must for anyone modelling or having an interest in Scottish 47’s in the 80’s and 90’s

already dropped a large hint to the wife about the next volume.
Cheers.

After the first copy got unfortunately lost in the post, I received my second copy yesterday morning after a fresh copy was posted out to me on Monday.

Having now read through it a bit, though not throughly yet, I can honestly say it is one of the best purchases I have made in recent years.

An excellent selection of photos with useful, on point captions. Clear text, with a wealth of detail on the condition of the various Scottish-allocated 47/4s throughout the 1980s.

For anyone modelling Scottish railways in the 1980s, I can't recommend it enough - there simply isn't another book that provides the requisite details to accurately model the locos in one place. It certainly saves scouring the Flickr albums! ;)

But seriously, considering this is essentially volunteer produced and not-for-profit, the quantity of information and quality of the book is really excellent.

I have felt a couple of the well-known railway publishers have suffered from reduced quality in their books in the last few years, particularly with photographic books suffering a large number of blurry pictures - this doesn't and I'm far more impressed with it.

To cut to the chase, if you are interested in 47s, Scottish railways in the 1980s, or both(!) - definitely a good purchase in my opinion and I look very much forward to the next volume on the 47/7s, if its as good as this I'll be a very happy modeller!

Hello,

I received my copy just under a week ago and I agree, it's an excellent reference book. Now I wonder if the team could be persuaded to send a free copy to Bachmann. Well they may need some inspiration for future class 47 models.

Looking forward to the next book.

On behalf of SDEG, I'm blushing with that comment! Many thanks for the praise and apologies for the first copy having gone AWOL. If you liked the 47/4s, hold on tight for the 47/7s and Push-Pull edition which will be coming soon... :-)

You are more than welcome, I've since read it cover-to-cover and it really is superb.

Not your fault at all, one is at the complete mercy of the postal service in that respect. And you were extremely swift in replacing it, so absolutely no complaints here - on the contrary, exemplary customer service in my view.

Here's to the 47/7 book!

The second print run of the class 47/4s book has been received and pre-paid orders will hopefully start being sent out tomorrow.

Unfortunately, the extra run of class 26 books has been delayed and we are waiting for confirmation as to when we are likely to receive them. For anyone who ordered both books together, we are holding a few days to find out when the 26s will be despatched to us.

many thanks for your patience!

Just a quick update as another few weeks have passed.

We are being updated by the printers today as regards the delay to the reprint of the class 26 books, but we have plenty of the class 47/4s volume in stock and ready to be despatched.

Work on the ScotRail Express and class 47/7, DBSO volume is now almost complete and it will be ready for signing off and then printing over the next few weeks.

Work on the 2023 mega ‘triple header’ of projects is now thundering along!

I have received notes from more than one person about a lack of reply from the SDEG email contacts, for reasons unknown, messages are going awol or spammed. Please PM me if this has been the case and I can resolve any cases via my own email.

thanks again!

Andrew

Finally some good news!

The delayed reprint run of the class 26s volume has finally arrived, so we should be sending out back orders for these and combined 26/47 orders on Monday and Tuesday! We can only apologize for the delay caused by a printing issue.

Meanwhile, some good news - somewhat earlier than planned, the next volume on ScotRail Express and the class 47/7s looks set to go for printing soon. In good time for Xmas!

The newly received additional class 26 copies have been checked out and are fine, so outstanding orders for these and combo orders for the 26s & 47/4s will be sent out tomorrow.

I'll post news on what the 47/7 will be available once printing is underway, hopefully in a couple of weeks time.

SDEG Scotland’s Diesel Fleet in Detail book update

An apology to anyone who has tried to contact us for the lack of reply from the SDEG email address. The account reached it maximum storage size a week ago, but despite having a clear out and back-up, incoming emails are still not being received, for reasons that are beyond me! Hopefully someone cleverer than I will get it sorted soon, but meantime, all of the book details are noted below - or drop me a PM.

Volume 1: Class 26s

Scotland’s Diesel Fleet in Detail; Class 26s is is a limited print 100pp hardback by Andrew Donnelly detailing the locomotives history during 1980s and 1990s. The intention is that this volume will be the first in a range giving both locomotive historians and modellers comprehensive notes on the history of these signature locomotives for this timeframe. Both the first and second print runs have sold out, so a short additional print run of the class 26 volume is currently underway with copies expected to be available soon. You can place your order and pay now, with ordering and postage arrangements as noted below, to ensure your copy as soon as new copies are available.

Despite an unfortunate delay with reprinting the extra run, these new copies have been received and are now available for despatch.

Volume 2: Class 47/4s

The class 47/4 first print run rapidly sold out and orders are being taken for the second print run, which is in stock with us now, available for despatch.

Volume 3: ScotRail Express

Due to the many enquiries regarding the next volume, we can confirm that the third edition, covering the class 47/7 and DBSO era of Push-Pull workings from 1979 to 1990, is at the printers NOW!

We are expecting copies to be available for purchase in mid to late November.

Details of how to pre-order will be made available to everyone who has contacted us regarding the first volumes closer to publication time.

Work on volumes 4, 5 and 6 is underway, which will be good news if you like class 37s!

Ordering

Each volume of Scotland’s Diesel Fleet in Detail is exclusively available from the SDEG for a cost of £30 plus £6.50 P&P for UK addresses. For non-UK addresses, P&P will be charged at cost; please enquire for a quotation for this. Payment is by UK bank transfer only. Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash, cheques or credit card payments. We will endeavour to fulfil your order as quickly as possible, but please note that some delay may occur with posting.

A small number of both Volume 1 (Class 26s) & Volume 2 (Class 47/4s) of Scotland’s Diesel Fleet in Detail are still available for purchase for the same cost and P&P as noted above. Should you wish to purchase more than one volume of the series or multiple copies of a volume to be posted together, prices including P&P will be £69.00 (2 copies) and £100.00 (3 copies) for UK addresses only. This series is entirely self-funded by the SDEG, with profits used for future volumes and to support the group’s modelling activities. The SDEG would like to thank the many contributors to this initiative, along with those who have purchased our previous volumes. Updates on the series, as well as of the SDEG’s other activities are posted on social media, including Facebook and RMweb.

We will endeavour to fulfil your order as quickly as possible but please note that we all have full time jobs so some delay will be inevitable as, for example, posting times will be restricted.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew Donnelly
