I did some more work last night with the kids.. Firstly they wanted to work out where the dairy is going to sit, it took some damage when we removed it from the old layout, but should fine after a few repairs.

Then I started to get the track in for the bay platform. I want to start building the platforms at the weekend, so I need to work out how long the bay is going to be, I think as long as possible! The genesis coaches need to fit, I need room to use as a head shunt for the dairy etc..

With the bay platform worked out yesterday, I started to build the rear platforms. Didn't get quite as far as I expected, I was looking after my two nieces and my daughter, I honestly didn't expect to see them all afternoon. They found a box of bits and the railway spent the afternoon transporting crates back and forth. They had a great time, but always makes me very nervous as they are grabbing things in and out of trucks. One Cattle wagon took a trip to the floor, so needs to go into the repair pile.

Looking at the bay platform, I figured I could get a short one in the front for a 'brown wagon' or two..

I looking a the two track plans for the yard, with the bay. Wondering if the slip would be in the first or second position.

Clearly, having the slip on the bay siding means I can shunt the whole yard while the kids are running trains round and round.  The head shunt in the first one is a little long, it certainly wouldn't be that long.

Has the dairy moved? Your original plans and the photos above had it in the top left corner, off the bay platform, however the more recent plans have it in the top right corner.

Personally, I think top left works better, as a loaded milk tank/van can arrive in the bay platform as tail traffic on an autocoach or railcar and be shunted back into the siding directly.

I've got the base of the platform built and the point motor in place, it's a surface mount as the rear supports are in the way. Glad I did that now, as the motor didn't fit and needed to tweak the siding.

Testing with some long parcels stock..

Interestingly... Neither the railcar or autocoach have any couplings..

I played with the track and moving some stock around last night. I think this is the best layout for the yard. Buy keeping the bay away from the slip, I get two small advantages, the headshunt is a little straighter going into the slip, should help running. And the bay can have a wagon added or removed from the main line train, without messing with the yard. OfficeVersion5-Station.jpg.ca72c144ccf6f76dce72373508b677ee.jpg

Thinking about the idea of a railcar(*) or autocoach with tail load working into/out of the bay platform, I realised that any push-pull workings from that platform need to go somewhere where they can reverse for their next run into the station. It occurs to me that there looks to be space in this corner of the fiddle yard for one or more reversing sidings, if you can work in another point just off the bottom left of this photo (or possibly a 3-way point instead of the one under the teak coach).

(*) It appears that only the later razor-edged GWR railcars (like the one you tried to sell me!) were fitted for tail traffic, the earlier streamlined ones (as per the Dapol model) were not.

The fiddle yard isn't quite completed.. Similar to your idea, there are going to be a couple of sidings on the inside. The idea that thew autocoach and also goods running can be arranged in the fiddle yard, pass over the first crossover to the correct line and then make it's way around the layout.

But, I decided to build the station area... The joy of this hobby is to be able to jump around between jobs :)

We made a little more progress with the platforms in the week, then the printer ran out of ink.. Hopefully more arrives today!

I also finished the bay track, as before the track actually ended a little short. My son has got quite good at leaving some parcels stock at the end and then running the autocoach in and out! Quite impressed, need to teach him how to shunt the goods yard next!

The Collet added a parcels van to the rear of the train and is running back around the coaches.

While a Prarie appears to have found a resting spot after desposting some trucks in the yard.

I decided it would be a nice idea to build a footbridge, forgetting that the trouble with footbridges is, they have steps! It takes ages to glue them all in!!

We also had a nice trip out on the Nene Valley Railway.. My little boy keeps asking if we can pay to get Mallard a boiler certificate. So, Sir Nigel Gresley in BR Blue is about as close as I think he will get to Mallard running again.

She does look and sound amazing..

The Prarie pulls into the bay. It will sit there for a while, waiting for the up express to pass. Once she is through, the empty milk tanks can be pushed back to the diary and then the loco repositioned for the return run.

Meanwhile the down railcar meets it going the other way...

More progress over a coffee break.. The scalescenes platforms go together quite nicely..

I've used some old foam board as the base, with 1.8mm card for the tops. Hopefully some matt varnish can seal it all together when I'm done, and the rain stops!!

The up local will drop the fish van for the pannier to move into the yard after its left. The 37 going the other way is about to have 2 milk tankers added to the rear.

The goods yard has been bugging me, the 3rd sidding is a little short, as it's is restricted by the shed. The area also isn't quite big enough.

Looking at the space, by adding a small add on from where the tablet control panel is, up to the bridge board, I can open the sidding up and have a nicer area for the yard. Maybe then some big trees to sit by the bridge and make the transition better. (a little)

Now where should that track end? ;)

Out the window!!

We snuck in a 4th little siding. But, my last cobalt motor, in the box, doesn't work :( It doesn't respond to any commands. So I had to bluetack the point in for now.
