There can be all sorts of reasons and boiler design as discussed throughout this thread (and many others), was never as easy as just making a boiler bigger and so it would be better at making steam - which obviously was the whole point. No, if you got the proportions wrong, if wouldn't steam right and boilers were often modified several times. As suggested above look for a history of Jubilee boilers and also the Princess class. Both were LMS examples and there was quite a complex history of refining the boilers. Adding/reducing the number of tubes and their diameter, increasing the number of superheater tubes, etc. History is littered with tales of how locomotives, didn't perform as their designer intended/hoped for! 1 1 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
