Thanks to Chris Osment’s site

Lynton & Barnstaple Signalling

I’ve had a go at the point rodding with a representation of the Economical FPL’s. I’ll add some of the other bits later to look closer but it at least gives an impression for now.
The Wills rodding looks fine in 7mm . . .

Although I’ve not so far found a photo of the hand point levers at Lynton, I’m assuming they match the ones at Pilton, the rodding is shown and a couple of references say they were all on the same side of the loop so I added the control rodding and will fabricate the levers from plastic.

I’m using the superb Dapol L&B signals in the original format with two separate posts for the bay and main. I wasn’t risking gluing up the mechanism so I made two identically sized blanks for the bases, tacked them down with superglue and ballasted around them.

A pile of woodwork for the legs and cassettes done yesterday plus plastering the last board.
Today saw all three corners wired up with the banana plug bus on each side and the station throat board all wired 😀 Nothing exciting to photograph but all useful ticks off the list. Hopefully wiring finished tomorrow and then the fun greenery and details all that’s left.

The question is, with Bachmann now offering it's 016.5 models, will you be widening the roster on this layout despite them being different parts of the UK, or will you be doing a little slate mine as your next project?

They may well run on it at home along with the rest of the O16.5 and Oe collection but not out n about 😉

Funny you should say that, I mentioned elsewhere that Mr Sheep’s shelf projects had given me an idea to mount a small shunting puzzle in a slightly different way.

There may be trouble ahead . .

all wiring complete and it’s wired for dc so I can power the track with dc and isolating section and and separately run the points and signals off DCC for full route control.

Well a result in that I figured out that to wire a Cobalt accessory switch you want the contacts wired the opposite way round to the rails!

IMG_6481.jpeg.a3fb73ed4c286f3847f38b79eacee70a.jpeg

(I’m using the switch rather than the DCC frog option so I can run the points, signals and routes off DCC while powering the rails from DC or DCC).

So all wired and tested and adjusted.

I added some hedges and brambles. Rubberised Coconut fibre with the sheets torn in half to get two equal size rectangles

Then torn up and stretched

pva jabbed on liberally

And then rolled and sprinkled with foliage

I mentioned up the thread somewhere that I’d made the slightly potty decision to use individual bricks for the platform edging so after all the glue and paint that could wreck them I started . . .

Laying them individually was back breaking so I came up with an idea that let me sit comfortably in the chair with a piece of 20mm angle and drop a pile in and slowly work them along held in place by gravity in the V.
IMG_6590.jpeg.b04f67a126078054280d9415a093ba09.jpeg

I could make up 6 inch sections and then brushed pva gently along at a shallow angle that stopped me picking up the bricks, yes that took experimentation 🤣

IMG_6591.jpeg.53d8ca471c130e189041fde81d39348d.jpeg

I set that aside to dry and did another set and then ‘decanted’ the first one onto paper to finish drying. This set to a flexible strip that was then glued to the layout with a bead of pva along the edge of the platform.
So overall there’s about 10 ½ ft and approx 1700 bricks and it took about seven hours! But it’s so much better than the scribed option so now I’m slightly cross eyed but happy 😝

Oh and I made some bufferstops from 10mm square strip pine.

Looks great. Out of interest, where did you get your bricks from, are they home made or sourced from the web?

Think the result will repay the tediousness of laying the brick edging in this way.

Dodgy joints due to ski jumps on one corner board that need sorting and loco that suddenly refused to drive forwards but sounded like it was and ran fine in reverse, needs investigation, but fun 😀

Need to fettle the freight stock, tiny flanges were hyper sensitive to board joins and they were too light. But all fixable.

Check the pony wheel pickups as they can be knocked out of place as mine did after cleaning the wheels.

It runs backwards no problem but just won’t go forwards, turn the sound off and no motor noise. I’ll try the spare chip and DCC blank on Dc to see if it’s the chip or loco

I do like the use of the Exmoor backdrop / curtain. That's something I must look into. I got quoted for something similar a few months ago but it was rather expensive!

Layout looks great and second the comment about the photographic backdrop behind.

Out of interest, which loco is refusing to go forwards? I’ve got two, the Exe as delivered and the 1903 condition Yeo, I’ve noticed that there is very little clearance on the motion guard on the as built version and it occasionally catches. The 1903 version has a more cutaway version with extra clearance.

The other thing to check is the pick ups. Have a Roco chassis under my Hunslet Mallet and it did the same. Turned out to be a pick up that had got dislodged somehow, in one direction it acted as a sprag in the spokes.

It wasn’t cheap but slightly more than a coach for 20x4ft (about 4ft wasn’t on display yesteday) and the photo was taken from the train at Woody Bay! The two frames were £33 each by Vevor off eBay and will be used with the Freem009 and Swiss layouts too. Freem009 will use the same banner.

Here’s the invoice and the breakdown of options

and data off the photo, note I sized it to roughly 5 by 1 on pixel count for a 20x4ft image
