The red Austin 7 tourer looks superb.

Very nearly bought a Austin 7 car way back in the mid 1960s (my first car) ended with a sit up and beg 1954 Ford Pop.

Looking forward to seeing the new project progress.

Dave T raised some thoughts on the short goods sidings and set me off playing again.

I’d sort of settled on the upper plan as it more closely follows the look of Lynton, albeit shortened, as it will fit four coach trains in both platforms. Four coaches was a max load for one loco.

image001.jpeg.08b2870596c1c8140e1551e26d3c80de.jpeg

Dave suggested swapping the station throat around, as the lower plan, to sacrifice the bay length and move the station end crossover to the left to give longer sidings to the shed.

I realised that swapping as he suggested allowed me to actually run round four coaches without a shunt release in the main platform if I didn’t move the r/h crossover.

I’d already had the idea to use a small extension board to extend the goods sidings although that would only be out n about as it will collide with the bookcase at home! In the 009 version the entire goods yard is on the extension.

image001.jpeg.d500b23c144e4b43ac67980e6dce304b.jpeg

So currently this is the revised plan, left end swapped as Dave suggested but the right end left as is with the optional 18” square extension on the end. I can run round four coaches in the main platform and I’ll accept the ‘off scene’ ends to the yard at home.

It’s a compressed version of the 009 layout! 🤣

Looking good. Presume you had a good chuckle when you realised you’d gone round the design houses and ended up with the same design as your 009 layout? At least you know how well it will operate!

Out of interest, how long a train can your 009 version handle?

Cheers,

Andrew

To be honest I started thinking I’ll copy the 009 one with compromises but thanks to people’s comments about the look I thought why not do that mini extension too and get rid of the biggest loss in siding length. Forums at their best thanks to everyone’s input.

Three and a van in the loop easily, 4 coaches just if you’re careful.

The goods shed looks good, I like how you’ve got the relief in the carving. Also think the brown looks better than the grey. The L&B buildings are many shades and hues of brown rather than grey. Maybe that’s partly why I like them as being different from the greys of the slate areas of Wales.

Ta, I couldn’t remember what base colour I used on the 009 versions 🤣 brown is looking better but the stonework still needs darkening so I’m slowly building the colour.

It’s just drawn in by pressing firmly with a sharp pencil.

Been debating whether to comment but is it possible to work some curves into the plan or even skew it a bit? I just think it adds so much visual interest compared to parallel lines straight up and down the baseboards.

edit: realised I'd missed a page. The latest with the extended goods shed on an angle is kind of what I meant. Could the other end sweep in from slightly bottom left so the whole thing is a gently sweeping curve apexing at top middle, or does that foul up the alignment coming in from the left?

edit 2!: who's are the etched wheels on the Austins please?

No problem comments are welcome, they help me not miss stuff 😁
Yes ideally I would curve the frame but the inspiration, Lynton, is straight and if I curve the boards much around that it won’t then fit in the car 😉 The plain line boards will be curved so they take up a bit more width and then it all fits between the wheel arches.
The Barnstaple (ish) one will have a slight curve at the end which will fit around the outside of the plain line boards.
It’s a compromise much like the shortened goods yard but it’s ok.

They are as supplied on the Ixo/Vitesse models. Search with the name and Austin 7 on eBay.

Yes I know the ones. I read Ixo as Oxford!

I've actually got a couple of chinese ones someone flagged on here that I bought for 5 quid which are basic generally but did have quite good wheels.

The coaches are probably the best rtr coach I’ve ever seen.

And I’m much happier with v2 of the goods shed.

I even took a photo of the colours used this time 🤣

Started with the sandy ‘Rosario’, followed by dry brushing the ‘driftwood’ and ‘Princeton’ for the main stone colour. Some were picked out in the xf-79 deck brown and dabbed with a paper towel to blend the colour down a bit. The bricks were done with a mix of deck brown, rosario and some signal red.

I’ve managed to find a couple of the Peco OR-24 early wagons and ordered some L&B style couplings from Slaters to see if they will be compatible with the Lionheart ones.

Needs a ply floor to hide the giant seam.

I added some 3mm pads to the floor and filed out the bufferbeam to match.

The adjuster fitted casting needed a bit of grinding out as there was flash that stopped the hook from sitting in to couple. Fortunately I had a 1mm grinding bit that fitted inbetween.

The brass hook also needed filing flat to stop it catching but works nicely.

Some more progress for NGsouth

I had a bit of a false start with the corner boards as I accidentally cut the tops to the profile for the OO modules, that’ll teach me to not label up the templates! Still they are now stored to be made up later.

IMG_3555.jpeg.bc138100d9e20c4011effe2d626dc303.jpeg

The correct 60° corners all parts cut and the first assembled fully.

This is what I’m building for NGsouth, the red fiddleyard will be a temporary one until I build the next station and will be one of the station boards eventually.

Some of the basic configurations possible.

Glad to see that some work has occurred. Interesting to see your modular schemes using those 60 deg curved pieces because G&H also do 60 degree sections of curves. Plus I’ve recently been able to compare moving a layout made up from 900x400 boards to a show and back with re-arranging my attic and heaving a 1200x600 board about the room and the difference in ease of movement between the two.

Cheers,

Andrew

Yes I saw those but adding my modular ends adds £14 to £57.50 = £71.50 and these boards cost me about £25 each cutting the rest myself so as I have the tools it nearly cuts the cost by ⅔.
