Whatever one's views on what R1's value should be, everyone agrees that it should be reasonably close to that shown in this graphic (which is the official NMRA pic).

 

Contrast that to the 'pizza-cutter' wheelset picture above, where no root radius is present. It's no wonder the running of such wheels is crap.

I have the feeling that some manufacturers treat their customers like idiots, if they will accept crap then they will be given crap.

It's just as well we're all different!
