I’ve been thinking the same thing.  There are a couple of plasticard spacers between the bogies and the chassis which I’m minded to remove.

Cheers

The buffer height is my own reality-check.

Can you fit the bufferbeams and check against another vehicle?

It’s great to see some proper down to earth modelling in progress. I converted a Lima Class 117 into a Derby Lightweight unit using an ancient set of brass sides and white metal ends, powered with a black beetle motor bogie. It’s gradually falling apart after several years of use but I’m happy with it - I much prefer what I built to simply buying an RTR version from Bachmann

That last photo shows you are still a tad high. What size are the wheelsets btw? Also not that the 109 will need the outside swinglink springs adding.

Also I'm not sure that the body profile is correct, this photo https://www.railcar.co.uk/images/2969 shows that its flat above the waist.

Sorry!

Cab front part temporarily taped in place.  The cast roof is much higher than that of the aluminium body.

Filing and sanding the white metal roof to a matching profile would leave a very thin layer remaining.  The problem was solved by gently bending the cab roof to match the body roof profile using small pliers.

White metal cab and rear face were then glued in place with plasticard strips reinforcing the joints.

External gaps in the joints will be filled and sanded.

Nothing unusual about the cast ends being higher than the coach roof, since you've mentioned it I do believe I resorted to the same ploy with the pliers on my Class 119 kit in 1975 - brute force and ignorance I think it's called! Worked though as it reduced the amount of filing.

The trailer looks even more of a greenhouse-on-wheels than the power car! And I'll be happier when you get around to sorting out those cab fronts, all that frowning is making me feel uncomfortable 😬!

Colin Massingham probably wasn't sure either Andy! 😃

It is an MTK “kit” so there will inevitably be compromises to get anything resembling the prototype.

The body sides are extremely flexible “above the waist” due to there being more window than body in this region so the profile in this area is a moveable feast at the moment.   Once I get some primer on it will be easier to see where more cosmetic surgery is needed - especially with the cab fronts.

The ride height is as low as it can practicably be and the roof and body sides line up reasonably well with the 110 DMU.  I think it is the MTK buffer beam buffer holes that are high.  Easily fixed though.

Cheers

I assume by swinglink springs you mean these items?

Looking at pictures of the preserved unit on the Llangollen Railway, they appear to have been removed.

BR / Wickham ( Class 109 ) 2-Car DMU E56171 ( 975 006 ) / E50416 ( 975005 )

Photos of in-service units don't show this area clearly so it is hard to determine what the spring link installation looks like in detail.

I can always model the unit as preserved...

Something odd about that diagram - the window depths are all over the place compared with the photo of the preserved unit.

It also indicates narrow cab-corner windows - which don't exist!

Yes - the diagram (on the Railcars site) is definitely iffy.  The illustration of the driving car has the hinges on the right hand side of the doors looking from the outside.

I’m basing the work on photos as far as possible.

Yes. Its interesting that the bogies on the preserved set don't have them, must of the units in the Railcar gallery show them*. But there is this wonderful page on bogies that I got the webmaster to write to explain:  https://www.railcar.co.uk/technology/bogies/ go to the Derby page, and there are some cracking shots of the swing-link springs.

I'm guessing that when you get the interior partitions in, they will help to sort the profile up a bit?

Andy G

Edit: * Looking that the photos on the railcar site, all the units kept them while they were carrying passengers, only the ER managers set (the preserved set) lost them, presumably when it was converted.

Any help?  This is the unit that became the GM's saloon.  Has the swinglinks in situ.

Note the straight-across cab end rain gutter - this alters the 'face' quite significantly..

Very neat work with the scriber. On the door outlines too - looks like a useful tool which I could have occasionally found a use for.

But you're probably glad it's not a 3-car set!

I think the cab fronts would come up well if you sand down all the bits that stick out, they all seem to be very overscale!

I don't envy you with those cabs end castings, again not one of Colins finest hours!
