Well, it's Sunday night, again. It's the day for this week's update and this time I'm listing all the North American and Continental layouts. Hopefully, Iin spite of several brain failures, blurred vision and things floating in front of my eyes (must take more whisky with it - or, perhaps, more !), I haven't made too many mistakes this time. If I have, I'm sure somebody will let me know !

In advance of you posting the US/Continental section, I have been invited down for a 'chat'(!!?!) with me ould mate Tim from "Fairdale" US H0. Read 'chat' as having a go at operating!

Looking forward to a great show as always (as long as I don't get dragged to Greece though I think that may come later!).

Cheers,

John E.

John - I'll be there as well with Northpoint - so please introduce yourself. You can have a go at operating mine as well if you like - providing Tim will release you.

Ian,

Further to your recent email I have some good news.

In response to all your recent optical problems I have managed to get you an appointment at Seymour Sharpes the optician on Salmon Pastures.

It is for 10 am on Saturday the 19th October 2011,, hopefully you will see us there!!!

On a more serious note for anyone interested and further to your recent posting we featured in the May 2009 edition of BRM,, although by the time Nottingham show comes round there will be a lot more to see than shown then.

Look forward to it.

SAD and Salmon Pastures

This year's main themed groupings have already been posted, quickly followed by either PMs or further posting from layout owners pointing all the clangers I dropped by mis-spelling their names, or their layouts name, or the era or ..... well, just about anything else ! Well, eagle-eyed RM Webbers, here's the remaining 4mm scale layouts appearing at this year's show:

OTHER LAYOUTS

Billingham - OO - BR (NER) - 1950s - Middlesborough MRC

Grove Street

Millfield - OO - BR WR - 1960s - Roger Nicholls

Salmon Pastures - OO - LNER - 1930s - SAD Burdett

Oldshaw is due to appear in the March 2011 issue of Railway Modeller. New Hey has previously appeared in Railway Modeller.

Billingham, and Salmon Pastures have appeared in British Railway Modelling.

I'll amend this post later with correct details of the magazines which have featured articles on the above layouts

I have just dusted down 'Grove street' and set the vacuum cleaner on it. It's quite shocking how much dust can accumulate. I keep meaning to set it all up and have a play make sure that everything works, but my partner has set up all the washing to dry in here so there's no room until late tomorrow. Bah Humbug!

Earlier today I took a jigsaw to the fiddle yard and sliced both ends off down to just above traverser level, leaving the front 6" scenic section intact. Instead of having square ends, this means that it more resembles an 'L' shape on its side. I figured that structurally the parts I cut off added nothing. But they did stop the fiddle yard section from fitting into the boot of my car. I tested it between rain showers, and the fiddle yard will now just slides over the lip of the boot. Once it is in there's loads of room. With the main scenic portion across the back seat and the legs slid behind, there should just be enough room for me and my fellow operator Sam in the front and two small overnight bags. That (hopefully) removes the need to hire a trailer and all the faff that that adds. It also reduces our expenses, which is no bad thing in the present climate.

Hi SAD,

Thanks for thinking of me and arranging the appointment. I haven't read it myself, as the text was too small. I couldn't wait for a new pair of binoculars to be delivered, so Lucy my Labradour read it to me !

But they did stop the fiddle yard section from fitting into the boot of my car.

Always amazes me that getting the layout into the current mode of transport seems to be the last thing on the builder's mind. The 3rd non-scenic board on Summat Colliery is 4 foot 3" long, just short enough to fit in front of the back seats in the scooby and just long enough so that 10 wagons, a brake van and my longest loco fit on the sector plate.

How often do we hear "it used to fit in my old car" - why get a new car that is too small for it's primary function? Surely shopping/kids/granny/fuel consumption are of secondary importance

oh b**ger, I've just bumped the Nottm Show topic - time for a Mansfield Show update methinks ;)

The main scenic board was designed to fit both in the available space in my office and across the back seat of my car. I naïvely assumed that the fiddle yard, being a foot shorter, would fit in the boot. Oh how those designers of the Volvo 850 saloon must have laughed if they could have seen my face when I finally tried - it has a boot lid so miserable that it poses issues even for small travel suitcases. There's space once you're in there, but you can't easily get anything rigid into it.

Going all A-team on the ends* of the fiddle yard seems to have meant that ONE way around and in ONE position it will clear the boot lip. Once it's in, there's loads of room and I can get other stuff in there with it too.

* "Get in the boot, fool!"

and at the first sign of rain no punters . . or the superglue degrading and falling apart if that mythical orange disc appears in the sky

Now imagine the big layouts arriving in artics, at least with burger vans like at Warley it'd look like a truck park :D that would be an extra source of punters too.

It's a pleasure Ian,, can I ask what colour Lucy is??? black,, golden or chocolate??

She may well have mystically appeared by the time we get to Nottingham!!!

As she is a Labra-dour can I assume she is from Yorkshire,,, and there's nowt up

wi'that!!

We just cannot do enough for an over stressed & optically challenged exhibition manager.

Life at the pastures is it's usual heady mix of serenity and muck,,,, only 30 odd days to go and we have about another 6 months work before "t'ode man'l be appi"

See you soon,,,,, hopefully.

SAD,

Lucy is golden and lives in my imagination, along with Sam the German Sherherd and a sqirrel called Alf.

Oh, hang on, there's a knock at the door. I won't be long, it's just a couple of blokes wearing white coats !

If you have to spend more money on buying a bigger car purely for transporting layouts in, can you claim it back on exhibition expenses....?

May be you should build your layouts actually in your cars. Then you could drive to the show and just pull up in the car park ! It would save a fortune - no venue hire, no barriers to hire, a much-reduced hotel and food bill. I'm warming to this idea !

Ian

For a show like Nottingham which has traditionally had links to Nottingham City Transport, why stop there? you could put your, much larger layout, on the bus. You'd have much more space and wouldn't even need a car park then. Show visitors could arrive at the Market Place and take the bus to, say Clifton, and see maybe Oldshaw on the way out and back, then change to one to Bilborough and take in a few more layouts....mind you, the the over 60s could see it for free, not much revenue there and no doubt the granny's would be complaining that the headroom in their favourite downstairs seat was a bit restricted by someone playing trains above their head!

Evening All ! Yes, I do know that it's not Sunday !

I deliberately didn't post anything last weekend, as it was a 'big' weekend with two top quality shows, Stafford and Rochdale, hence there was alot of postings on those two threads.

We now have an additional layout for you:

North American Layouts

HASTON New England - HO - Vermont Rail Systems - 1980s - Chris Gilbert

More information to follow soon.

WEBSITE UPDATE !

The Exhibition Layouts Webpage and the Trade Exhibitor Webpage have been updated tonight to reflect recent additions and a withdrawal.

The Travel to the Show, Day Membership Rates and Opening Times Webpages should be uploaded in the next few days along with, hopefully, our new Layout Gallery Page.

Questions or advice of errors always welcomed.

This link seems to be broken.

Thanks for letting us know.

My previous posting has now been amended and the link to our Trade Exhibitor Webpage has been re-instated. The letter 'r' in the word 'trade' was missing. Mind you, I had to zoom the screen to 200% to see it !

There were a few other errors I spotted on this Webpage. These have been corrected too.
