RMweb Gold Richard_A Posted December 27, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 27, 2023 I've decided to give em gauge a try, as I haven't yet got a layout so I am not restricted with anything, recently I started building some airfix, Parkside etc wagon kits but used the OO gauge wheels which came with the kits. My question is can I regauge these or are EM gauge wheels slightly different?
RMweb Gold Bucoops Posted December 27, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 27, 2023 Gibson wheels come in two sorts - P4 (usually a blue tag but also marked as such on the label), and OO/EM (usually a cream tag and also marked on the label), OO/EM wheels come with axles for both gauges - although pinpoint bearing axles are the same length for both. In short, you'll be fine.
RMweb Premium CloggyDog Posted December 27, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 27, 2023 A good half of my EM wagon fleet ride on regauged Gibson and Romford OO wheelsets. You'll need an EM back-to-back gauge, but it's pretty straightforward a job. Just make sure there's the same amount of axle protruding either side of the regauged wheelset. 3
CKPR
Just use an EM back-to-back gauge and reset OO gauge wheels, making sure that the wheels are perpendicular to the axle.
RMweb Premium Siberian Snooper Posted December 28, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 28, 2023 If you buy the kits from H and A models, you can specify EM gauge wheels with the kit.

I'll be doing this from now on, just don't want to waste what I already have.

You may find that the EM wheels will foul the brake gear. With care it should be possible to remove the brake gear and reposition it. If not you'll have to carefully shave back the brake blocks until the wheel flanges clear them.
