Whatever our man is using to get to this height, it has a fair turn of speed, as it got down here before the K3 did.

 

 

 

Even after it has gone, the action is still on the Up. A Cravens DMU has arrived from Louth, and is now adding a different type of pollution to that which is already under the roof.

Light engines feature this morning. A B17 has appeared by the coaling stage.

 

 

 

and 60088 has come down from New England and is waiting in the bay for its return trip to Tyneside.

Right, couldn't play golf as I seem to have done something to my heel, and it doesn't like being walked on. This has given me a chance though to photograph all of my latest acquisitions together, though I couldn't get all four in the same shot. Here are the two which Tony brought over yesterday.

 

 

As Tony says, they are already well accustomed to the ECML, having run on both Gamston Bank and Retford. They will run normally as a set of four with the two Willets/Studley cars.

 

 

This gets me half way to what I eventually need. A lot of the West Riding extras/reliefs/ Q trains were made up BSK(3) 4 SK(8) BSK(3) 4 SK(8) BSK(3). These four will, of course, make the remaining four 'orrible Hornby things look even worse, but it's a start.

I don't think so Peter. I did it years ago playing football,and it was agony, whereas this time I can't recall doing anything or feeling anything untoward. It is proboably back related as usual, and something trapped higher up is causing problems elsewhere.

 The Heart of Midlothian is the morning's featured train, with Dominion of Canada at the head.  The classic view coming through from Crescent Bridge first.

I'm getting a bit frustrated and restless, as I can't really do anything other than sit or lie down, so no energy gets burnt. I soon know about it if I try to put weight on the damn thing though, so I'll have to just hope it soon improves.

 

Pictures are from four days ago, and show 60010 again, emerging from the gloom, and then at a stand while the fireman uncouples.

I reckon it would have been smoky most of the time, but then we were used to living in smoky atmosphere if we were town or city dwellers. Think of the reaction if something like that existed now!

Any excuse for a pre grouping 4.4.0. though.

 

Back to normal now, and another 9F brings empties along the Down slow.

This highly important question was discussed with Mick Moore at EM North only recently.  We concluded that they're tubes if they're used inside a larger piece of machinery and pipes if they aren't.

In submarines  pipes can be any shape or size. Tubes, on the other hand have doors on them and normally have torpedoes in them.. although the whole submarine is a tube. It is closed at both ends.

Gilbert I'm glad you took the last photo, it reminds of times I've arrived on a platform or looked over the lineside fence to just miss the loco and see an interesting set of wagons trundling by. Quite evocative. To me railways are more than big express trains and named locos.

As it happens, pipes and/or tubes are on my to do list at present. I've read a very helpful thread on here, and now have to work out what to do, although if they should be sheeted over, it doesn't really matter, does it?

I must go and sort out the fishes accomodation, which is generating too much algae. First though, pictures. We have the Cravens unit having a rest against the Arcade wall, while waiting its next duty, which will take it to Grimsby this time. The destination blind is unlikely to say so though.

 

 

Meanwhile, Green Arrow has arrived with the 1230 FO from Doncaster. We shall have a look at the stock behind the tender later.

Next question is "what colour should my pipes and tubes be?" While considering that, here are the photos of the formation of the 1230 Doncaster.

 

 

This can now almost be correctly modelled. The only cheat is that I've had to substitute an all door SK for a Thompson CK. Coupling incompatibility again.

Hi Gilbert

 

What colour? It depends on the material they have been made from, if it is fresh from the factory/steel works or if it has been in storage and was it stored in or outdoors? So greys of 50 various hues, browns and rust or if concrete a concrete colour. Then some pipes were made from clay so a glazed earthen wear brown. Must not forget a splatering of white dots on the tops where the pigeons, seagulls and crows perched on them last night while in the yard at Thornaby.

They can't be tubes - proper colour for those is red, though nowadays they only have red on each end! The rest is white and blue....
