Another Doncaster engine, this time an A3, Diamond Jubilee, with new double chimney. This is another Up Leeds, due through here at 10.05am.

This afternoon's visitor was Andrew from far away Australia, and known as Woodcock 29 on here. A very pleasant three hours mainly spent chatting. Did he see any trains run? Don't be silly.

60046 still rolling through at 20mph, and with that Station Road view to the right.  Andrew rather shocked me yesterday when he told me he last visited eleven years ago, which caused me to think back to how far developed the layout was then. That in turn made me consider the additons since, and to realise that Station Road is the biggest and most significant visual improvement since the station buildings and overall roof were completed. Its impact, to my eyes anyway, is out of all proportion to its size.

On the Down slow, we have a 9F with more mineral empties, but it is going nowhere, as there is a constant stream of expresses on the main.

and here is the next one, the 8.40 KX-Edinburgh, with a spotless world record holder in charge.

There was sun today, but my efforts to take advantage were somewhat frustrated. I took my glasses off to deal with something very close up, put them down and took forty five minutes to find them again. Can't see a thing with out them , you know. Well, actually I can, but I had managed to hide them very well.

More of the mighty duck today. The classic view coming through the curve at the south end first.

It would be better if the bridge carried on to the right, so that the loco could be a bit more to the left, but as I haven't solved that problem after fourteen years I'm unlikely to do so now.

 

Then I tried this.

Off goes Mallard, beginning to accelerate away.

This formation is very similar to most used on the Newcastle and Edinburgh services on a Saturday, so we shall examine it in detail, first part now, and the rest this evening.

Part 2 of the Edinburgh formation.

 

 

A couple of BSKs, plenty of end vestibule seconds, and on most, but not all, catering in the form of RF/SO, as here. Some with no catering at all, so passengers making the whole journey would have needed to come prepared.

 

Twelve minutes later we have a down Leeds, and another Doncaster engine, A1 60114 this time.

Thanks Andy. They do seem to be popular, so there will be more. Not the one that ran this morning though. BSK3 10xSK8 BSK3 didn't seem very inspiring.

It's that A1 again, but this time there is a 9F to look at as well. It has been waiting here for quite a while, and will continue to do so, as even when the flow of Down trains pauses there always seems to be something on the Up.

which is what happens again, as the Little Barford coal is allowed out of the yards first. As usual, the shed foreman has borrowed a visiting engine for the task.

Back to the other side of the 04/8.

It sort of grows on me, this does. The rebuild takes little away from the grace of the Robinson design, and it is still a loco with plenty of character.

 

Little of which can be seen from this head on angle, but it is an angle I like to try occasionally, even if it does mean dealing with those nigh on impossible lattices.

The sound of the 04s exhaust has hardly faded before the home sigal on the Up is pointing skyward again, to allow the arrival of the 7.43 York, with its customary filthy A2/3.

It is having to work a lot harder than usual, as instead of the lightweight seven cars during the week, it has thirteen in tow on Saturdays.

Now running along the platform, for the first part of its stop.

It will have to pull up to get the last couple of cars onto the platform, and we shall look at all thirteen tomorrow.

Nothing has appeared on the Down main for eight minutes, but now Dominion of New Zealand appears with the 9.00am KX-Edinburgh. This, of course is the Elizabethan in all but name, hence the reversed headboard.
