I find the whole subject of Doctors rather confusing.  I am now back with the practice that is the direct descendant of the one I belonged to from day of birth - in fact from birth as the then GP was involved in my arrival.  His practice involved him and a District Nurse (possibly two District Nurses), he had a surgery every weekday morning where you went in, got a number and then saw him when your number was next in turn; after morning surgery he did home visits and a couple of days he week he had an evening surgery, oh and he came out to you, at home, in the event of a dire emergency.

The descendant practice seems to have at least 5 regular GPs, several nurses, a phlebotomist, two receptionists on at any one time, several medical secretaries, and a practice manager. With all these resources at their disposal you cannot normally get an appointment to see a Doctor less than a week in advance although in a serious situation you can get in same day, I need to make an appointment at least three days in advance for a blood test, it takes two days to get a prescription except in an emergency (then it can be much quicker) and although the Doctors do home visits they use a deputising service for out-of-hours calls.

I find it totally inexplicable that a surgery with something around 5 times the number of staff of the old one has insufficient resources to see patients on a drop-in basis as we did in the past.  I also find it totally inexplicable that it, and the other practice in the town (it has also grown from one Doctor to several), are serving a population which has increased by no more than a fifth (c.2,000 - 2,500 people) in my lifetime yet the access to healthcare has become a mater of joining a far longer queue than existed 50 years ago.  All very strange.

I blame the Receptionists, Mike.

Was she one like this:

An older gentleman had an appointment to see the urologist who shared offices with several other doctors. The waiting room was filled with patients. As he approached the receptionist's desk, he noticed that the receptionist was a hostile, unfriendly, miserable woman. He gave her his name.

In a very loud voice, the receptionist said,"YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE; YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?"

All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at the very embarrassed man.He recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice replied, 'NO, I'VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE OPERATION, BUT I DON'T WANT THE SAME DOCTOR THAT DID YOURS.'

The room erupted in applause!

Smugly grinning at the thought here,

Tony

I blame the Receptionists, Mike.

Just over 10 years ago I was regularly seeing a Chest consultant after a lung problem.  She used to say - 'right I next need to see you on such & such a date'.  I would then go to the receptionists to make an appointment - much sucking of teeth and shaking of heads until I said 'well that is what she (the consultant) has told me she wants'.  Instant change of tone - 'what time would best suit you that day, she will be here at such & such time?'  Appointment duly made on the day the consultant wanted at a time which suited me, how odd.

(I think she probably frightened them as she was certainly a very 'firm minded' lady and it might also have had an effect that they had heard me talking to her in Welsh - not that the receptionists knew that all I had said was 'good day and how are you?').

Simple facts are people are living longer, the advances in medicine  mean more can be done now for many diseases than say 25 years ago, there is the drive to move care into the community by that I mean checkups/followups/monitoring which at one time had to be done at the hospital are now for certain conditions done in GP land.

I would hazard a guess that there are not many days with free appointments which means people are visiting the Gp and yes maybe in some cases a visit is not warranted.

Back in the 60s how many people had an ECG or Glaucoma checkup in their Drs surgery?

Yes we might grumble at times but as an example my wife phoned for an appointment for her mother in law this morning. No appts but when my wife explained the situation she was given one for 10.00 this morning for the emergency surgery.

All GP practices are different and we are lucky with ours and there is always good and bad, I do agree about the out of hours service, I d rather see someone  from my practice than a complete stranger.

Final note, on a £ basis the older you are the more a GP gets paid for looking after you!

I go to the doctors surgery, stand in the queue, and listen to those in front of me who are grunting, groaning, f*rting and belching and generally giving the receptionists a hard time.

When it's my turn I give the receptionist a big smile, and say : 'Good morning, I wonder if you could help me please?'

I never seem to have a problem with the receptionists who seem very keen to help me.

Perhaps it's because I flutter my eyelashes at them! (It's a glaucoma treatment side effect joke).

Regards

Richard

All this talk of GPs reminds me that I have a couple of prescriptions to collect today.

Gordon, you can get thinner lenses even if your eyesight is worse. Aditi pays a lot for her lenses. The rimless "frames" aren't cheap either and they are just a few bits of titanium (or whatever) .

Well just to show Ashers that you don't need to go to Portugal for blue skies, here's a couple of photos (as promised) from Milton of Crathes taken this morning.

I should say, just in case ERers abandon their winter sun breaks for the Highlands that on the drive back up to Ballater this afternoon it clouded over, temperature dropped to 3oC and it started to rain. :)

After Marions eye specialist got upset at the mess our GP made of refering her to the hospital we suddenly found the practice had moved us to a different doctor. Hadn't told us so it was a bit of a surprise when he phoned with a query about the eye drops.

Most appointments are released on a daily basis so there is a mad rush at eight o clock when the phones switch from the out of hours. By quarter past you have a problem getting the better doctors. However if you need to be seen that day they will fit you in at the end of the surgery's but no appointment time so you can be hanging about.

After my complaining about the weather this morning it threw it down as we were about to go for a walk but hung on for 5 minutes when it cleared and we had a beautiful sunny morning walk through the swamp sorry copse.

Good morning all,  predicted temperature here  around 32c.  Don I'll have to try that pasta recipe,  my pasta bakes normally have lots of cheese sauce!  Strange night went to bed around 10:30, after long chat with GF who's wintering in Daytona Beach,  then woke just after midnight....full of life! So spent the next hour chopping up a fresh pineapple that I bought yesterday,  and wandering around this site.....told my self I must go to bed.....sleep still alluded me though....but did drop off eventually.

Have a good day  folks,

Trev.

Bonjour tout le monde! That is when the rest of you get here (apart from Don & Trev-who already are)

Trying to rain with yet another promise of more to come & temp 9oC (Again)

Mrs GB deposited at work, traffic light,no idiots out (yet) this morning. When I meet her from work we are scheduled to go on a domestic foraging expedition. This is most important to keep her in the manner she to keep me in the beer I'm accustomed to.

I will probably be back later

Morning all. Rather blustery here but dry at the moment.

I'm a bit tired as I was having an email conversation late last night with Matthew about plans for us to visit Calgary at the start of April. It is complicated as he has exams then and we are not too sure whether the weather typically at that time of year is conducive to sightseeing.

I don't think the weather will be too unpleasant when I go to Houston in  a couple of weeks.

Morning all.  Sudden squall passing through woke me up.  Hopefully it will pass through quickly as the gang of three are golfing today.

Each to their own Don.  I'm afraid spinach or any greens come to that are the same to me as sprouts are for you.

Morning all...

It's fairly blustery indeed and there's a weather warning of winds gusting up to 7 to 8 bft. Will have to stop by at uni later on to have some paperwork done, but aside from that, nothing of particular notice on the agenda.

Cheers!
