RMweb Gold Accurascale Fran Posted October 12, 2010 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 12, 2010 Hi guys, As a relative newcomer to the US scene, I am about to repaint and detail my first US locos. I recently bought an Athearn Genesis SD70 (standard cab) and a Kato SD40-2 very cheaply as a previous owner ruined them with a ficticious livery (I couldnt put a pic of them on here, truly hideous!) Anyway, as I got them very cheap, I thought it would be a perfect start for learning about detailing US locomotives and indeed locomotive detailing in general as I am new to this part of the hobby. I figured that if it all goes well I get nice locos for buttons and learn new skills, and if I make an even bigger mess (though that would be hard on these two!) then I have learned a lot along the way and am not too much out of pocket. The thing is though, I dont know who make detailing bits, transfers and paint and who will retail them. I have googled a few different places but they dont ship outside the US or Canada and I live in Ireland. So with the power of all you guys on here who dabble in the dark side, I was hoping you would be able to tell me where I could buy parts, paint and transfers for the following; SD70 - I want to do this as a Conrail unit, so conrail transfers, a good match for conrail blue. Also, it needs new handrails and cab glazing, who's product would be best for this? I might sort out the lights too if anyone has any suggestions? SD40-2 - I was thinking Norfolk Southern for this, so transfers and a good match for their black? If people are interested I will keep you updated with progress shots along the way, and all info is greatly appreciated! Thanks,
Glorious NSE
There are a few UK importers, but you might find you have to order stuff specially which may take a while. I use http://www.modeljunction.info/estore/ in sunny Slough, they do keep some detail/paint in stock but can order anything from the walthers catalogue plus some other places. They also can use a clever system via the http://www.walthers.com/ site, you can order there and then select to buy the items at a local store, model junction is listed there and they will then import what you ordered and bill you in £GB - it can take a month or two doing it that way as it relies on them adding to their monthly Walthers order, but it's pretty reliable and convenient. For the SD70 spares i'd email Athearn directly to see if they have them in stock For NS black personally i'd just use Halfords gloss black spray, but it probably depends on what your favoured painting methods are. F-UnitMad
M G Sharps of Sheffield are another good supplier, particularly of Microscale Decals which will probably have exactly the decals you need (it's a bit of a list so I haven't actually looked!!) Model Junction should also be able to help you with paints; the PollyS range will have Conrail Blue; I should imagine NS black could be any black!! For info on the real locos have you seen this website; RailPictures.net? you can type in the search boxes the exact number of a particular engine and Road name, and if there's pics of it on file, bingo! Unfortunately the site does tend to throw up other pop-up adverts which can even elude ad-blocking software it seems (well it does mine!!) - it's a bit of a pest but the main website is a wonderful resource. Another one is Fallen Flags, again a huge resource of pictures of all things Dark Side. Scroll down the home page and you'll see all the railroads listed. Again with a bit of searching you can usually find exactly the loco you want. Enjoy..!!

Hi F-Unit Mad, Cheers for that, railpictures.net net has been providing my muse for each, right now I'm looking at the following as the candidates: NS SD40-2 - http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=335459&nseq=26 Conrail sd70 in its NS owership - http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=222320&nseq=305 mmmm! great site, pity about the popups as you said. Allegheny1600
Hi there, These two webpages should sort out pretty much all of your detailing needs and show you what is available! http://www.detailswest.com/ You certainly used to be able to get D-W parts from MG Sharp, looks as though you still can! http://www.mgsharp.com/Details_Associates.htm The above site is of course, easily availiable in the UK as it is MG Sharp of Sheffield - a long time importer and dealer in US outline! For various other US details, see here also; http://www.mgsharp.com/Detail_parts.htm or http://pws.prserv.net/jltrain/detail_associates.htm HTH, John E. 158722
For transfers I would order them direct from Microscale.com. super quick. Always have stock and just 'arrive' Have had bits and bobs direct from details west and the like but occasionally get stung by import duty.
RMweb Gold Accurascale Fran Posted October 12, 2010 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 12, 2010 Thanks once again guys, looks like I've ordered everything via the retailers recommended and ebay, just have to play the waiting game and sort out some British and Irish stock before I get stuck into these two!
