1955 BR SR Carriages sets, Headcodes

Hi All,

Could someone tell if it was possible that, as in my picture of N15 No.30764 'Sir Gawain' (Stewarts Lane), it would have been likely to pull Maunsell Set 201 in blood and custard, with what I think might be a suitable west-east headcode? As in possibly Bournemouth or Southampton-Dover or something similar? It's a bit late now to choose, but would be interesting.

I bought some of the Hornby Coaches which formed Set 201, as they were some of the first Blood and Custard Maunsells available, suspecting that I might need to alter the Set No. as I am primarily interested in 2 Coach P-Sets in the far South West.

.

Sometime back I downloaded what looks to be a fairly reputable list of SR Coach Set formations from one of the specialist SR "study" websites. This has proved to be accurate as far as the information relating to Southern far west P-sets is concerned.

On that basis this list shows Set 201 - 3730,5635, 3731 as being "allocated" to Waterloo- Weymouth workings from 1930-1960. For period 1960/61 the 2 BTK's seem to have been incorporated into an eight-coach Set 201 "allocated" to Waterloo/Salisbury/Bournemouth/Weymouth workings. So I guess Bournemouth is more than plausible but Dover is more problematical.

I hope this information is useful and not something you already knew but it will at least give a "bump" to the topic and I am sure someone more knowledgeable will respond if it is incorrect.

Hi Rob'

Just adding a little more info' to Davids and PhilH's very informative replies.

After leaving 73A (Stewarts Lane), 30764 was allocated to 71B (Bournemouth), in 1959. AFIK, it remained there until withdrawl in July 1961.

As David states, 3-Set 'M' No. 201 was SR Western Section allocated, throughout it's life. From 1930 to 1960, it retained it's BSK+CK+BSK formation. In 1960 it was re-formed into an 8-Set 'M', with the addition of 4 x SKs + 1 x FK + 1 x SO, losing it's CK, in the process. The set was withdrawn from service during the following year.

For a full run-down, see here.

Here is a list of Southern headcodes from 1944 onwards. The rest of the SEMG site is worth a browse too for all things Southern.

Thanks, it appears I have chosen;

Victoria or Battersea Yard and Eastbourne or Hastings via Quarry line

London Bridge, New Cross gate or West Croydon and Wimbledon

Brighton and Littlehampton direct

London and Hither Green Sidings

Victoria and Folkestone Harbour or Dover Marine via Swanley, Otford and Tonbridge

Waterloo or Nine Elms and Plymouth

Bournemouth Central and Dorchester goods trains

Light engines eastleigh Loco depiot and Dean

Battersea Yard and Brent via New Kew Junc

Southampton Terminus and Portsmouth Harbour via Netley

Brockenhurst and Poole (not stopping at Bournemouth)

Feltham to Salisbury via Chertsey

Which suits the Eastern Section loco on a Victoria-Dover Marine or Folkestone, via Swanley Otford and Tonbridge service

but perhaps Waterloo-Plymouth (or section thereof) but with a replacement Stewarts Lane locomotive is more plausible?

Thanks for the reply, the SR headcode site is excellent.

I see what you mean about the Semg data being a trifle hard to follow, Olddudders. It shows Set 201 re-formed into an 8-Set later, date shown as 1960, rather than 9/57 shown in your link / chart.

Interesting to see it was allocated 'Special Traffic'' as well. It might have suited Robmcg, if it had happened a few years earlier.

Regards.

Aha! "Special Traffic". A much loved aspect of my railway modelling!

I'm sure I saw an excellent photo of a mid 1950s Marsh Atlantic at the head of about 5 Maunsells + van on a Bournemouth-Brighton train, with the headcode in the N15 picture, but couldn't easil;y find the photo...
