halfwit
A perfect excuse for those lovely die-cast VW vans. Don't forget to include a couple of tired, rusty and 'rat-look' vans in the forecourt.
yellowvanman
your right , I haven`t tryed weathering any cars or vans yet but plan to have a few rusty burned out ect ..and a `ratty` old split-screen van is a must.
halfwit
..and a `ratty` old split-screen van is a must. At least they're affordable in this scale! Its a shame nobody does a 4mm scale T4, my wife owns a panel van that's been converted to a camper.

Very good, just a thought, what if you google or wikipedia for the VW symbol to display on the side of the building.
BernardTPM
How about scratching a T3 - just the thing for the early '80s.
m0rris
If you are going to have a rat look van and you model military as well, if you can source some iron crosses ((i.e. german ww1 symbol) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_cross) small enough for them, you can make it look the part! m0rris (oh... nice work so far, and an interesting way of getting your cars out on display that I might use on my next railway!). halfwit
Nice work YVM, you obviously know your splitties. Roof rack a little high perhaps? A like the 'patina'. I forgot to say earlier that your garage looks typical of many around the country - well observed modelling.
yellowvanman
cheers paul ..yep roof rack needs to drop down into gutters..not sure which end to put it yet?..was looking for some alloys in nippers car box but no joy ..these wheels look to big , another pic showing it with original model..cheers yvm.. Black Sheep
Can't help thinking, in the first pic you posted of the model on the layout, with the bay's rear end showing in the doorway, how good it'd look if it was up off the floor so you only see the lower half of the back end as if it's up on a lift with someone working on the underside of it. just a suggestion
yellowvanman
Good idea Black sheep ..I have an out side ramp made up , but an inside ramp would be there for sure ..
pitbull1845
Hi YVM, haven't looked at this until now, it looks really good, it reminds me of the VW garage by Wareham station... model railways, it's not all about the trains... Excelent work..
yellowvanman
cheers pitball, I know the garage at Wareham and have used it for my own van a couple of times ...perhaps i need some vans out front for sale ?, I should be doing more with the track and stock but quite happy just spending £3.50 on some cars and vans ....just been to model-zone in Southampton to have a look and brought the ford escort XR3i...and a bag of grass stuff for more scenics, some great locos for sale but very expensive, will have to keep going with my old stock for the time being..cheers YVM... Black Sheep
Some paperclips and some material should make a nice Devon or Danbury conversion on one, or perhaps even a westafalia (have seen models of) but with the roof up, would look great in the for sale row at the dealership! yellowvanman
Yea, more good ideas blacksheep...here a couple of pics of outside ramp and a little more greenary sprouting...cheers YVM
Black Sheep
Your for sale row might fit where you've got a Mini Traveler parked in the photo of the cortina? I'm not sure about the outdoor ramp, the ramps look very narrow as they appear to be the same width as the T2's wheels. I know my uncle actually narrowed the pit at his garage (which used to be a lorry servicing depot for a mill) as there wasn't much room for error when putting a car over it metal garage lifts tend to have about half a tyres width either side of the wheel (assuming that track width of the vehicle allows the tyre to sit in the centre of each ramp) I don't mean to be rude, It's a good model, I just think the ramp under each wheel should be a bit wider, both to allow for human error when putting a vehicle on and also for differing axle (track) width of different vehicles. Possibly add some steps (my uncle uses a ladder against his lift) for access to and from the vehicle when it's up there some loading dock steps would probably do very nicely. RMweb Premium M.I.B Posted December 23, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 23, 2010 Don't forget to include a couple of tired, rusty and 'rat-look' vans in the forecourt. We didn't have rat look or iron crosses in the 80s (thank goodness). UK wasn't very big on vans either - in the early 80s, most spliitys were tired working hacks or hippy mobiles - no-one lowered them or put alloys on them. I was at Bug Jam 1 and I think I only saw 2 bay windows, and they were driven by "older" drivers who thought that they were off to an "old fashioned" VW show !!!!! (Bay crew owner, hot oval owner, and recent ex 23 window samba owner)
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted December 23, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 23, 2010 As a classic vehicle owner I take 'Practical Classics' every month. They have a feature called 'Memory Lane' with photographs of street scenes from the 50's through to the 80's. I have found them very useful as a modeling aid with regard to the types and condition of road vehicles at a particular period. They have published a selection of these photographs under the title 'Classics on every corner' that I think you will find useful. yellowvanman
cheers chaps ..fair comments ..the ramp is a tad small , smaller bits like steps may be added in time , the time period (1980s)is wrong for the van` scene` with rat look ect ....but as they say `modelers licence`..I also have a small brewery which is rail connected and a pub which is open all day serving 8 real ales...something you would never see in the 80s...
