brian777999
If I built a brass locomotive and then left it for 12 months (nowhere to airbrush in the new apartment) the model would probably acquire the usual brass tarnish. Could I etch prime directly over the top of this or would the tarnish have to be removed first ? How would you remove this tarnish without damaging the model ? You could not scrub at it using a wire brush without dislodging handrails and other small parts.
Kenton
If it is only light tarnish (from standing around) and not from leaving it in contact with flux residues - then simply an old toothbrush and Cif type cleaner or Ajax scouring powder should bring it back to shiny new. No need to use a brass bristle brush or any power tools.
Miss Prism
I knew someone who intentionally left etched brass builds for at least a year before spraying them. Provided it is still grease-free, paint will stick far better to a tarnished surface than a shiny one!
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted February 13, 2011 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 13, 2011 Viakal - a proprietary limescale remover, available from Asda etc. is very good for cleaning up old brass. Cheers, Mick
brian777999
Viakal may not be available in Australia. I will check it out though.
