RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted November 17, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 17, 2009 Some of you will probably remember the photos I posted on the previous version of the forum of the adaptation of a Hornby 'Thomas' range bookshop (a Skaledale type resin building) into a chip shop for Callow Lane. Here are some of the photos from the old forum, plus a couple of more recent ones, showing the nearly-completed building. This is the original Hornby building (not mine, but another taken with kind permission of Expressway Models at Buckfastleigh, where I bought my original): The Hornby item has been amost completely re-painted, certainly all brickwork, doors and windows etc. (the original brick colour was very light and almost fleshy pink). One of the features of this building is the flashing 'Fish & Chips' sign, which required a large hole to be drilled in the resin wall to take the wiring behind the sign: An interior was made for the chip shop: At this point the chip shop is nearly finished, just the framing around the flashing sign to do:

birdseyecircus
Excellent conversion! But in order for the sign to flash the shop has to be open not closed - other wise the owner is wasting leckkie! Paul

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted November 17, 2009 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 17, 2009 I think its the Express Models one. Yes, that's the one! Excellent conversion! But in order for the sign to flash the shop has to be open not closed - other wise the owner is wasting leckkie! I know, but I didn't want a slightly cliched scene of people waiting inside for their chips, so I have decided that it is the moment just before opening the doors to the public!! RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted November 17, 2009 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 17, 2009 The menu is a bit limited... where is the mushy peas or curry sauce? Mushy peas are on the menu, but there's no curry sauce sold at this establishment! (was curry sauce that common in chippies in the early 1960s?) BlackRat
Large cod and chips twice, with batter bits on one and a flagon of tizer please! (must be chippy friday!!). You cant beat Skaledale!!
RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted November 17, 2009 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 17, 2009 Mushy peas are on the menu, but there's no curry sauce sold at this establishment! (was curry sauce that common in chippies in the early 1960s?) Not round here it wasn't - in fact not so much 'not common' as unheard of.. In the meanwhile six of chips and a pickled onion please; most chippies seemed to have a jar of pickled onions and another of pickled eggs on or near the counter. The Caversham Fish Bar went one better - it had a framed photo of 'The Great Bear' on one wall, huge pic - about 4 feet long B)
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted November 18, 2009 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 18, 2009 If its the "moment before opening to the punters", I hope you like painting lots of little people with shopping bags then Nah! Just a very quiet day in South Gloucestershire!
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted November 21, 2009 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 21, 2009 Now then, what's going on here? Chip shop's been converted to a North Sea oil rig?! The brass bars are epoxied into 2mm holes, drilled right up inside the thick resin walls of the building: The reason for this is to provide a secure anchor for this relatively heavy building when it's finally placed on the layout. This morning, I made the base unit for it: The brass bars locate in the holes in the base unit, which is made from Dalerboard (a type of thick card). The base unit will, in turn, be securely fixed to the baseboard. Here is the building temporarily in place on the layout:
